Hi,

I am getting my firearms license and would like to go hunting and take up the sport of target shooting. I am inheriting a .303 British and .22 target rifle. I would like to hunt whitetail, elk, and maybe moose. I would like to buy a rifle for less than $1000 preferably in .30-06 or something close to that calibre. Any suggestions would be nice.

Thanks,
Chris

:( well a 30-06 would be a nice gun but i suggest a crosssbow for someone as small as you . if you really desire a big gun try a .270

Where are you hunting?
Expected ranges?
Type of terrain?
Important considerations if you want to pick a rifle fitted to the hunt.

Savage or Stevens rifles offer the best bang for the buck IMHO. The savage has that wicked accutrigger!!!

Caliber is YOUR choice... I'd go with 308 if you want to target shoot lots... 300 WSM if you are mostly going to hunt with it...

My next rifle is a Savage 12FVSS in 300WSM, the stainless one... Here is a linky for ya!

"Let the games begin .............."! :D

Me, I would suggest a 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser, light of recoil and very accurate!

I'd look at a Remington m700 CDL in 30-06, if you like blued/walnut rifles

if you're more a stainless/synthetic guy, look at the Remington m700 XCR in 30-06

if you're somewhere in between, and like a bit lighter packing rifle, check out the m700 LSS mountain rifle.

you could give me either three and I'd be happy

There are lots of rifles you could buy in that price range. I strongly suggest you look in the Exchange forums here for good deals on usually well cared for and proven rifles.

That 303 will do a lot of what you're asking if it's in good shape and you learn how to use it well...

"...am inheriting a .303 British..." If the headspace is ok, you have a dandy deer/elk/moose rifle.
"...buy a rifle for less than $1000..." Scope and taxes included? If so, you're looking at a used rifle. That's not a big deal. Used rifles aren't like used cars. It takes a lot of abuse to wreck a rifle. Pop into you're local gun shop and have a look for a used Savage, Remington or Winchester bolt action in .30-06 or .308. Ammo for either is readily available anywhere(.300WSM and 6.5 x 55 may not be)and both will take any game in North America.

Your 303 would be a great gun to start hunting with, if it is in good shape. When you are looking for a new hunting rifle, you need to evaluate your needs before making a choice:
- How far will you be shooting?
100yrds or less
100yrds to 200 yrds
200 yrds or more?
This, with your type of game, will determine wich type of caliber you need and if you decide to put a scope on it (and it's magnification)

-You also need to now what kind of action you want: lever, pump, bolt. brake open or semi-auto.

-What kind of magasine do you want: fixed, removable or tubular

-Do you want a wood or synthetic stock ?

-Do you want a blued or a stainless barrel ?

Here are a few examples in your price range (with out scopes and rings):

- Remington 7600 (pump action)
- Browning BLR (lever action)
-Tikka t3 hunter, remington mod. 700, weatherby vanguard, steven's 200(bolt action)

For a good starter hunting rifle (best bang 4 your $) check out the Savage 111fcxp3 ( www.savagearms.com ) It's a bolt action available in 30 06, with a detacheble mag and a mounted scope that is included for a total of 411$
Happy shopping :D

Hey

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry, I should have been a bit more specific. I am pretty sure I want to go with a .30-06 preferably with a synthetic stock. I will most likely be shooting at targets/deer at about 100 - 250 yard range. I live in BC (close to Vancouver) so gun stores are pretty abundant in the area. As for scopes, I don't want to pay more than say $800.

Thanks, Chris

get a Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm for around $450 and you'll be well set in the optic department

you cant really go wrong with any big name bolt action, whether it be a Browning, Ruger, Remington, Winchester, Savage, or Tikka...my personal preference is Remington but everyone has their favorites

Chris

Go into Reliable Gun and Tackle down on Fraser St and see what they have. You should be able to get into a good bolt action 30-06 for a reasonable amount. Just don't cheap out on your scope. If you want to save some money get a Leupold 4x and you'll be laughing. You can't go wrong with that combination.
