New SKS report and tech sight question

So I just picked up a new to me Russian, laminated stock, SKS. The last owner gave me a great deal on it because he fired it once and had used corrosive ammo and put it away without cleaning it. The next time he looked at it it had quite a bit of rust. So I picked it up for $50!.

After some scrubbing and boiling water, the barrel comes out shiny and spotless. No pits, no marks, no evidence of rust. The little bit around the muzzle and in the chamber came off with some G96 and a couple patches. The last bit on the bolt took some WD-40 and steel wool, but came out without leaving any pitting only a slight stain on the metal. The gun looked fantastic when I was done.

So today came the test. Took the gun out with some Hornady Zombie Max ammo (before anyone starts, it was the cheapest non FMJ ammo at the shop :)) and was able to get about 3 inches at 50 yards. I was pretty happy with that all things considered. Not bad for $50!

So my question is, how much of a difference would tec sights make? Should I be happy with my new toy as is and leave it alone, or would the tech sights improve the groupings enough to make it worthwhile?

Thats a good deal JeffeR.
I would leave it all original.
With an sks as far as accuracy, there aint none.
I would save my money on the sights, and just put it towards a crate of ammo and shoot it for what its worth... Lots of fun at the gravel pit. ;)

The tech sights won't make the gun more accurate, but they will allow you to shoot it better. My experience with the sks is that they tend to move around in the stock. This makes the gun act less accurate than it really is. Glass bed it or run a hole at 45 degrees from the back lower edge of the reciever down into the stock. After that you are into handloading. Happy shooting.

Do yourself a favor and get the tech sights. I put the TS 100 on mine and then later upgraded to the ts200. I also put the williams fire sight on the front end. There is no comparison to the stock sights. Anyone who says it is a waste of time has probably never shot with these sights. It will GREATLY improve your hit percentage at normal SKS range. I consider 100 yards or so to be where I can best lay the hits down on milk jugs and the like.
FWIW, the surplus ammo is not very accurate in my gun. I can get soft point Prvi ammo locally and it shoots much better. My handloads shoot best in mine, but if you can find Prvi Partisan it will likely open your eyes a bit. Let's not get into silly "my SKS shoots under 1" BS. Mine does not. I can say that I can put killilng shots into a milk jug's vitals all day long at 100 yards. For me that is super accurate for the russian peasant gun. Nuff said!

I've shot with regular irons and with Tech sights.. Tech sights help a lot both with your accuracy and speed of acquisition. Not only are they mounted at the back of the receiver (which I find superior to Williams) for accuracy, but also, using a peep, you acquire your target a lot quicker than with standard irons.

Don't dismiss surplus ammo just because someone else lacked the 2 minutes to clean the rifle properly when using corrosive/surplus ammo. For a few extra moments of cleaning, you can cut your shooting costs down to 15 or 20 cents per shot.

If your action slops around in your stock like throwing a hotdog down a hallway, don't bother with the tech sights until you have sorted that out. The tech sight is okay but ganderite's brazed on peep sight, with top cover threaded for a 1/4X20 tpi bolt is superior.

The tech sight is only useable for a short range zero. My $.02 your mileage may vary.

.

I wasn't. The local range isn't allowing FMJ ammo right now because they say it is a fire risk in these dry conditions. I will be buying a case of surplus ammo ASAP.

Action seems pretty good actually. I was able to hit some clays at 50 yards easily, so all in all it seems pretty good. Much better than the last SKS I had. I just wasn't sure if that was the best you could hope for, or if I should keep tinkering.

Fair enough. We got a range here with the same issue, so i go there a lot less and shoot my surplus at the farm. Its hard to justify the cost for thier silly rules. If you want real accuracy, buy the PRVI commercial loads. I can get 4 shot through a dime at 100 yards with the CZ bolt action.

Tech Sights rock... Surplus ammo.... Standing....

If that zombie ammo is giving you 3 inch at 50 what is surplus giving you ?

Jeff, how old are you? If you are over 40, peep sights are much easier to use than an open sight.

I am almost 70. For me peep is the only iron sight that I can use.
44. I have peep sights on a couple other rifles, so I am familiar with that, I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't dropping 80 bucks on the peep to get virtually the same accuracy as the stock iron sights.

Haven't tried the surplus yet. Cant wait to see what I get with that.

Try one of these and you will never use peep sight again.

If you only knew how much of an electronics geek I am, you wouldn't believe me saying this, but it's nice having backup once your electronics crap out. For now, I'm using the stock irons as back up for my reflex setup (dovetail screwed into the side of the receiver, shortened AK mount, red dot), but I will wanna put on some Techs eventually.
