I'm not sure if this should be here or in the Precision Rifle forum, but here it goes:

A friend of mine from back home was talking to me about his interest in firearms. In his email he sent me this little tid bit of info:

"I see that the US military has a new sniper system. Its based on the M-16/AR platform, but it fires a larger bullet... something weird like 5.58 or something"

This is news to me. I know I just got back on here after a year hiadous. Can someone please elabourate??

US MIL 7.62mm M16FOW adoptions
US ARMY: M110 (KAC)
USMC: Mk11 Mod1 (KAC)
Mk11Marines-2.jpg

USN: Mk11 Mod0 (KAC)

Other than Unit Rifle Team usage, USAMU concept guns, and some small USAF Security Force buys the US MIL has no AR10's

6.8 is not really in service -- and its not in a sniper system.

All modern "AR10" systems are based of the M16 and not the original Armalite AR10 from the 50's. As a matter of fact, the current Armalite AR10 is the furthest from the original design, since it uses M14 mags to get around the old AWB in the states.

The current KAC and DPMS offerings do use the original AR10 magazine design, but other than that they are based off of the M16

Since Armalite owns the AR10 moniker...

Plus shooting an Armalite and a KAC gun is in my experience worlds apart (albiet KAC does cost 4x as much)

And at that price the KAC gun is IMHO 10 x better engineered than the Armalite

Ok, I'll bite. Based on what criteria? Do you own both? Have you shot both? How many rounds down range between the systems?

I'm much more interested in a side by side comparison of the KAC and DPMS rifles. I'm sure that the KAC is the better rifle, but is the DPMS a reliable system?

IIRC its a double walled can - and those weld are the inner and outer wall welds.

I have 3-4K thru both an AR10 and SR-25 series rifles. Other than some supperssor zero shift issues on the SR-25 Battle Rifle I have no had any major reliability issues with the KAC guns * as long as one does not try to use them as a SAW (yup people have done it)

I own an AR10T -- however its due to the impossibility of getting a SR-25 in Canada (I think 2 are in Canada - and no one want to sell me one...)

Armalites main issues are the non standard gas tube length (thus making most SR-25/Mk11 rails etc not fit) - and of course the M14 mags that sucked ass
Given that a lot of time and effort has been spent on the new mags -- I would venture that the majority of the AR10's issues have been solved -- but the SASS selection proved once again that the AR10 is not as reliable as the KAC gun.

DPMS is a reverse engineered SR-25 -- but some parts are quite fragile (I.E. bbl nut) and some have that retarded raised upper receiver.
And DPMS and Remington partnered on a gun for SASS- it came in third

I handled both at Shot 07 the KAC M110 does Feature a truly ambi mag release , bolt release, Folding frontsight and a KAC designed gas venting charging handle and is better fit and finnish than a Armalite product

Yes -- but KAC was the only system that passed.

In the words of the testors -- "well it sucked the least"...
ARMALITE AR10 "well it sucked the least"... now thats advertising that money cant buy

For normal use, range and stuff, IMHO, pretty much any AR platform will do the job. Unless someone get screwed with the AR purchased, you won't ear of anyone having problem with a range queen. Of course, there always gonna be options available to make it better, and for what I picked up, KAC is there to produced a better out of the box rifle, so soldiers and governments don't have to bother getting to much extra stuff.

But even then, any SF/Agencies fighters will make some pers mods to make it better in accordance with is own specific needs. It all come down to what you want and at what price.
