new to 223rem nedd powder advice

I did a fair bit of testing of 52 gr. SMKs in my 1:10 twist 24" bull barrel AR-15 target rifle. I used Benchmark, IMR 3031, Win 748 & Accurate 2230. None of them performed badly (all of them under an 1" with 5 shots at 100 yards) but the best of the batch was Benchmark. Consistently 1/2" or under with the best group being .28". And that was with a cheapie Tasco scope & a decent but not great RRA match trigger (about 4 pounds pull weight). After those results I stocked up on Benchmark.

It took me almost 5 years to use up my original surplus powder purchase from Higginsons (WC845). When I went to re-order I was surprised to see that the new surplus powder was changed to WC735. You can't beat the price of $17 a pound. We're very fortunate to have Higginsons provide handloaders with such a wide selection of components. I used to buy a pound here and there from various places, but I now exclusively buy bulk from them, as I can spend more time on load development using only a few choice powders. I'm trying out a load for the Hornady 75 grain BTHP bullets out of a 1/7 in an AR and a TAVOR. From what I've been reading the results are less then stellar. Not sure why, but that's the fun of rolling your own.

4064 for the heavies works well too. The 69 gr SMK seems to do well in 1:9 twist barrels, but some people report the longer 68 gr Hornady as not shooting well in the same barrel.

I've had good loads with 69gr Sierra MK's over 23.9 gr of H335 out of a 9 twist barrel. Watch out for changes if shooting in cold temps though as I find the H335 is a little sensitive.
