New to Buckshot

hey guys reading all the posts here, my dad was a member of the RCMP and has since passed away i used to ride in the police vehicles all the time, the 12 gauges back then were always loaded with SSG's he called them what were they? anyone.....

Likely plain old Winchester 9 pellet 00. As for buckshot for wilderness defense. Just do a search it has been beaten to death over and over. Long story short, buy slugs. Preferrably Brennekes like Foxer said. Personally I have a 2 3/4" 12 pellet 00 shell in the chamber with 6 2 3/4" Challenger slugs to follow up. I'd use Brenneke but I can't find any of them out west.

In addition, where can one get rock salt and teargas shells? I'd rather stun Mr. Bear than kill him.

If the bear is charging you probably will not have the luxury of deciding to go the peta route. Go slug. Make the first one count and keep slugging him/her.e

Does anyone know if tear gas works on bears and if rock salt works other than in movies?

The standard issue SSG for the RCMP back in the day was Imperial Special Long Range buckshot. It was 0 Buck, had 12 - .32 cal pellets, was a hot load and was excellent ammo. Still have about 100 rounds of the stuff that I am keeping for a rainy day. Later, the RCMP started issuing Federal 0 Buck, and then went to the Winchester low recoil 00 Buck which patterns quite well, but sucks for power.

The moral of the story here is to buy good slugs. Challenger or the cheaper Winchester power points are sufficient. Brenneke's if you can find them.

Funny, I have some Remington 0 buck that I find to be excellent ammo. I have only seen it the once and it was on clearance when I picked it up.
