Yup. For bears - slugs slugs and more slugs. Brenneke if you can get 'em.

hey guys reading all the posts here, my dad was a member of the RCMP and has since passed away i used to ride in the police vehicles all the time, the 12 gauges back then were always loaded with SSG's he called them what were they? anyone.....
In addition, where can one get rock salt and teargas shells? I'd rather stun Mr. Bear than kill him.

Likely plain old Winchester 9 pellet 00. As for buckshot for wilderness defense. Just do a search it has been beaten to death over and over. Long story short, buy slugs. Preferrably Brennekes like Foxer said. Personally I have a 2 3/4" 12 pellet 00 shell in the chamber with 6 2 3/4" Challenger slugs to follow up. I'd use Brenneke but I can't find any of them out west.
The standard issue SSG for the RCMP back in the day was Imperial Special Long Range buckshot. It was 0 Buck, had 12 - .32 cal pellets, was a hot load and was excellent ammo. Still have about 100 rounds of the stuff that I am keeping for a rainy day. Later, the RCMP started issuing Federal 0 Buck, and then went to the Winchester low recoil 00 Buck which patterns quite well, but sucks for power.
