New to Glock, which one to buy???

I am interested in a Glock in 40S&W or 45ACP but know virtually nothing about Glocks other than shooting a few at different times. I understand this has probably been covered before but I find reading through the millions of Glock threads kind of confusing with all the numbers and different generations. I haven't had a lot of time for research either so I figured asking will help get me set in the right direction.

So here is my question, out of the two cartridges I am asking about, which is the number or generation to buy and why?

Any help would be appreciated.

G21 vs G22

Glock makes great guns. Theyre tough and its easy to get replacement parts for. No 9mm?
Gen 3 addded rail grooves to receiver, finger grooves to grip, later Gen 3 added changed extractor serves as loaded chamber indicator. Gen 4 has smaller grip with backstrap add-ons to changed size, changed trigger bar (has bump which seems to make trigger pull "heavier"), different recoil spring that seems to causes problems (FTF) for 9mm.
G21 larger/heavier than G22
40s&w snapier than 45acp
Both are great guns..buy both!

Glock 22 (.40 S&W) is built the same size as the 9 millimeter Glock 17.
The Glock 21 is a larger frame. The 21SF is the short frame (front to back) version, which really caught on.

Here is a 17 (same size as the .40 model 22) and a 21SF (.45 acp) compared in size

I would say it comes to which one feels better. A lot of people suggested I get the gen 3 when I was looking but when I compaired them I found the gen 4 fit me way better. I have put 1200 rounds through it so far (all cheap lead) and have only had I problem and it was a very minor mag problem.
 
I bought the G22 because it was the most common pistol used by IDPA group. If I needed an extra Mag or part, it was almost always available. Also, the gen 4 with no backstrap fits my hand better than the gen 2.
 
The difference in price for ammo is negligible so that's a personal choice. As mentioned, the G21(45) has a significantly larger frame than the G22(40). Unless you go the G21SF route, I would suggest something in 40. If the full size isn't your bag you could go compact (G23) or subcompact (G27). Regardless, Gen 3 is the way to go IMO.

I have a Glock 22, i really like the 40cal. I also have a lone wolf barrel for the Glock 22 which changes it from 40cal to 9mm, literally takes 20 seconds to change it out. I think this is the best way to go, the 9mm ammo is cheaper than 40cal and they are both really fun to shoot. It basically lets you have 2 guns for the price of one. You can even use the 40cal mags with the 9mm ammo, but i bought seperate 9mm mags. The lone wolf barrel was about 150 bucks, WELL worth it imo.
 
I think the Gen 4 G22s are getting to be pretty solid guns. Previous G22s would often screw the pooch if a light was attached to the light rail, but I am hearing fewer reports of this on the Gen 4s.

The older G21s were known as some of the less reliable Glocks, but a lot of people do like them.

If you're going to get a G21 I recommend the SF frame.

The G21sf is a nice gun but without grip tape i found them a tad slippery, the RTF2 G22 and 17 have been my favorites. Id say a Gen 4 G21 would be nice with that stipled grip.
 
got the 21sf and never looked back. no matter what glock you get, you are in for some enjoyable shooting.
fwiw. the .45 will leave bigger holes:D
 
Why do you think they have so many generations (it's up to about 984 by now right?) They haven't got it right yet. Get a SIG or a 1911, or better yet a 1911 SIG :nest:
