Well I bit the bullet........ I went and got myself a Norinco M305. Now the learning curve begins. I have two boxes of 150 gr. cheaper ammo to try out tomorrow. Is this a good choice? I looked at four different guns, looking for the best barrel and front sight indexing.....I chose the best looking one. Its still wacky but, I'll give it a go at the range before the mods begin. Its a short barrel model........If I like it I'll get a long barrel model. Any tips or helpful hints guys? Cheers DRail

P.S. I hope my #### doesn't fall off.

If you are able to, a USGI op rod spring and aftermarket op rod guide, such as those made by Sadlak, S&J, etc. will be an instant drop in improvement to accuracy for a minimal cost.

How can I tell the year?......Is it on the rifle in the serial no.? Where do i Get these parts?......The op rod guide is the flat piece inside the spring? I just looked at the packing list that was in the box.........it says 2012' 05 for the date....but this might mean nothing.

Oh ya, welcome to the addiction. Read our FAQ's and sticky'ies at the top of the forum. Learn lots and read lots. All great fun.

Welcome to the friendliest section here on the CGNutz site.

NM / cylindrical op rod guides can be had at SFRC (board sponsor) and/or One Shot Tactical (sells the S&J brand)... another board sponsor!

Cheers,
Barney

Clean, lube, look for problems like loose gas plug, gas lock, or interference with the stock and op rod. Also the sights are often improperly adjusted for tension. Or if you're unlucky, the threading is stripped.

I had it all apart .....thoroughly cleaned , all the trigger pivot points got some oil. The gas piston got cleaned with brake cleen and reinstalled....all the main wear areas lugs, etc, got a light coat of grease.....what does the screw with the roll pin next to the gas port do?.....limits the size of the orifice?Or an on/off switch for the gas?......I haven't touched that. Its good to go for a test. I'll put three through it and the check for interference?.....

That part is the spindle valve. It shuts off the gas for use of rifle grenades - it basically turns the M-14 into a straight pull bolt action rifle.

Like the other guys have chimed in with, clean, tighten things, replace spring and guide etc. I have been shooting Federal 150 gr. Soft point Power Shok(the blue box) with no issues. Its cheap and it provides good grouping. Have fun...:welcome:

Welcome to the addiction!! These suckers are beautiful and utilitarian all rolled into one bundle of fun :D Depending on your location and availability, I highly recommend you check out one of Hungry's or 45ACPKING's clinics. You get huge improvements for one day of tinkering!

I'd love to go to one of those...I come from a machining background...I used to love being the backyard gunsmith. I would like to get a lesson......or two. How do I get into the EE?......I have 8 whole posts now. I need to buy some gun parts.

get to a clinic when you can, they are fun.

~150gr is about right for volume shooting, you can go 168 for accurate handloads, but that stresses everything a little more. the 'design load' was 147 IIRC

It is disappointing that they don't come with ammo bandoliers, grenades or bayonets, isn't it? seems they really should . . . would be more fun.

Make sure the Gas system isn't turned off most are when you get them. (single shot) Make sure you clean the oil out of the firearm and use grease to lube it back up and it should work fine. Lots and lots of oil to remove it's a pain in the rear.

Mine shot far left out of the box so the sight needed some adjustment not much. I also changed the guide rod it cycles allot smoother not because of it something you might want to change down the road it also helps with accuracy

Well, I took it out and shot it for the first time.......out of the box I was really impressed for it being so inexpensive....I started by doing the two bullet method , shoot one , looked at both the spent case and the next bullet to be fired.......a little primer ding on the second.from the fring pin touching it. But Hey ! it didn't fire out of battery , or make my #### fall off , or mess up these rugged good looks. I did a grouping at 109 yds. (weird range I know) i actually got less than 2'' and a little more than 1.5''.........two holes in the target were just about touching. I was dinging an 8'' gong at 109 alot....now i'm no shooter mind you, but, I am impressed with this thing...I guess its time to make a few mods.

I just got a "new to me" Norinco off the EE. I've found some cheap 7.62x51 Norinco non corrosive ammo at Budget Shooter Supply. I was considering shooting that for a little while. Should that be OK ammo to shoot for cheap?

ya the norinco stuff is fine, thats what i shoot, im new to shooting and can hit a 10 inch pig silouiette @ 300 yards, so that makes me feel good about my rookie self
