I am wondering about "commercial purposes on a case by case basis" What does this mean for everyone who is planning to go out and have some plinking fun with some tracer rounds? Anyways I wonder if the OP is able to provide some examples of commercial purposes that would or could see tracer rounds approved for sale by the ERD. Will tracer ammo or projectiles be available for sale to the general shooting plinking public or is this all just wishful thinking by us and just talk by the OP?the ERD will now entertain authorizing it for commercial purposes on a case by case basis.
Depends on which compound is used. Some ignite in the barrel from the propellant gasses, others are designed to not ignite until several yards after they leave the barrel. The delayed ignition ones can still light in the barrel from time to time based on my reading and of course every so often a tracer wont ignite at all regardless of chemical used. They produce extra heat above what is normal but within tolerances for any decent barrel. Many say they can lead to slightly increased barrel erosion but others dispute this. I wouldn't shoot any through a fancy, expensive hunting or match/competition rifle but would have no issue shooting some through milsurps, beater hunting rifles, or tactical type firearms.Do the projectiles damage anything?
Chamber, barrel?
I think that in order for tracer to be more widely accepted by the fish cops, etc., it should be marketed as a safety item for anyone in the bush.
Get lost after dark, break a leg, etc., load and fire 3 tracers straight up and wait for help.
So that suggests all popular hunting calibres.
We were examining some .22 LR tracers but all of the US based manufacturers are little shops that buy primed brass from the big manufacturers. With the ammo shortage of late, well...you can guess what the backorders are like.Has there been an update on this yet? Is anyone going to bring in tracer Ammuntion? Looking for XM17C , M196 and M62
No. Theoretically some combustion byproducts could be deposited in the barrel as the composition ignites but I would expect shooting steel jacketed corrosively primed ammunition would be worse.Do the projectiles damage anything?
Chamber, barrel?
I would not pursue this route as I doubt any SAR pilot would care to expect live ammunition being fired skyward while they pass overhead.Any further thought to marketing them as safety signalling ammo?
