So I image a few people have received their new XCR-L this week from Wolverine (Thanks guys)! What is the best way to break in a new gun?

Shoot a few rounds then clean and let cool then a few more and repeat?

Thanks everyone for sharing your insights... If I'm going to out shoot a Swiss I need every advantage I can get!

No there is a process to breaking in an XCR. I think your supposed to shoot 1-200 rounds on gas setting 4, then lower it gradually every 100 rounds or so until ur on setting 1-2
 
It's my understanding based on wolverines latest posts, that the gun should be broken in on the lowest gas setting that will reliably cycle the action. This is what I've been doing with my M
 
the manual says shoot a couple hundred rounds on gas setting 4, but, from what ive heard, that juts ends up abusing the buffer pad badly... gas setting 2 seems like the best way to go...
 
Barrel break in? HA! Tyler picked mine up off the tailgate of my truck and mag dumped 2 LAR mags off the hip, The remaining 180 rds were mostly rapid fire. It was below zero and the rifle was still warm after the hour long drive home. Now it shoots 1.25" with handloads and I haven't really started load tuning yet. I started on setting 4 then to 3 now it runs great on 1. Go with the lowest setting that will run reliably otherwise you will mash the bolt buffer. Wheres that vid with the guy breaking in the barrel on his Kimber?
 
I only ran mine on 4 for two or three shots. As the empties damn near went into orbit I figured it was safe to reduce the gas.

Only a couple of shots on 3 to check for function and I turned it down to 2 where it ran reliably. This was a 7.62x39 gun using surplus ammo, YMMV.
 
From my manual, page 16, gas adjusment/break in;

"To ensure the mildest recoil without sacrificing reliability, use the gas setting which throws the spent cartridge cases approximately 8 to 15 feet from the rifle. If you feel trigger slap, the gas is set too high."

That's all they tell ya.

I have a 7.62x39 that runs on 2 flawlessly with surplus. The first couple rounds were on 4, another 100 or so on 3, and I had 2 ejection problems on 1.

Chrome lined barrel doesn't need much, just shoot it and play with the gas system till it cycles and locks back after last round on the lowest setting before it short strokes.
We'll break it in good at the end of the month when we hit the range again.
 
Did anyone have a issue with there bolt catch? I put 100 rounds of 7.62X39 thru her and the bolt catch was starting to get tough to actuate. 40 rounds later the bolt catch was stuck and the bolt was also stuck in the open position. So i took it all apart and was amazed at the amount of wear on the bolt catch and on one spot of the bolt. ( ill take photos and post them when i figure out how to do so). After a good cleaning and a heavy lube on the points that i was concerned about it started to function better. I put another 80 rounds thru her and called her quits for he day. Just curious if any one else had this issue as well?
 
I've got 3K-ish through my 7.62x39 and no bolt catch issues at all and I've never taken it out or lubed it.

Got any pics of your bolt catch/bolt wear?
 
Use the high gas setting for a 100 rounds or so then reduce to a lower setting. If it is cycling properly with your ammo then continue shooting until, as said before, your hungry. It isn't a tack driver. Don't worry about the barrel.

ill take some pics later today of it. i still dont know how to post pics on here, but ill figure it out. I ll try to explain the point of concern. on the bolt (both pieces together) theres a forward and rearward position with a slight rotation of the centre portion. in the forward position, theres two 90's that fit together to hold it forward and they roll off each other when the rotation takes place to move rearward. well the 90 on the centre portion of the bolt it quite worn and has a significant radius to it now. mind you it works now after suck ware. wasn't sure if this was normal or not.
