I just got back from another Cape Buffalo hunt in South Africa. This time I used a .577 NE Single Shot that I made out of a H&R 10 ga.

Enjoy the video on YouTube. Go to YouTube then type in "Brian Hunts Cape Buffalo"

Excellent vid . My dream hunt , Cape Buffalo . How about some details on your rifle , the conversion , your load , the bullets ? One very brief section in the vid , were you picking the bullet out of the opposite side ?

Great video, looks like a blast. The trip and the rifle, a nice little scope kiss at 5:05, braver man than I ;p . And here I thought my single shot 12 gauge with a slug had a bit of shove!

j_06,
I was hoping no one would notice that! I cut my forhead twice on that trip. I would get excited and get to close to the scope or not hold it properly. It's not much more than your 12 ga. slugs to shoot. Slower push than your 12ga. with slugs. You will notice that the muzzle stays down. I made the stock very straight with high comb and butt pad. The rifle weighs 15 lbs. and most of that is from the 27in. bull barrel.

Thanks for your interest. Brian

atr,
Thanks for your response and your good questions.

H&R SB2 10 ga. frame. Process is called "barrel stubbing" or mono bloc., in which about 4 inches of the chamber end of your old barrel is used as a receprtor for a new barrel.
Barrel is 27" long and heavy and I built the stock very straight to keep the muzzle down under recoil. (See how high the scope is). Rifle weighs 15 lbs.

.577 NE with 700 grain hard cast bullet. BHN 22. My own alloy, heat treated. Flat meplat of 72 % of bullet diameter. Minimal expansion. Terminal performance same as CEB or NF solid.
1800 fps with 115 grains of Vhit N550.

Bullet under the skin:
You are right!
I actually killed three cows on this hunt. The bullet under the skin came to rest there after breaking one shoulder and cutting off the top of the heart. All kills were one shot. I have killed cape buffalo bulls with a 375HH, but this ,577 NE is awsome. We were all very impressed.

Brian

PS. If you are not a trophy nut you can hunt cape but cows for less and they just as exciting and dangerous as the bulls.

Great information . Most of us dream about these hunts and some get to do it and i think we all enjoy reading about it , hearing about it and the vid is a huge bonus . Several guys on here post about these hunts and i keep reading and re-reading the stories . Thanks for sharing yours and if you have more , post 'em . In my younger days i've hunted from Texas to the Yukon but life got in the way of Africa .

I've stubbed 20 or 30 H&R rifles into unique cartridges, two of my favorites were a 6.5X55 Swede and a 9.3X74R.

No better memento than a nice battle scar, especially one from hunting Cape buffalo with a custom made single shot! Yes watching again your stock design really does controll the recoil well, great work and thanks for the reply.

Really . I've been a gun guy and a hunter for well over the shady side of a half century and i've never seen one . Many years ago before Al Gore invented the internet i bought an Enfield , i believe a P17 off a gunsmith out in BC that he had converted to 45-70 . He advertised it in the Gunrunner paper . Long gone .

Yes, I think that the 405 and the 45-90 would be cool.
I am in the process of making one up for the 50-110. 500 gr bullet at 1800 fps. I will be chambering it for the 450 grain CEB solid state shallow of a little more powder room.
This will be a great Cape buffalo round. It will be like a 458 WM or better but I can still keep pressure down with N540 powder.
I think it terms of what brass is easy to get. ( .577 is not easy!)

I'm in Ontario and no longer work with H&R rifles, got out of them when Big Green folded the company... I sold off most of them here on the EE, so a few CGNers are shooting them. I did a .45/120... that was a real kicker!

fastcutcnc, Thanks for posting the video and congrats on the buffs. I hunted for buff in the Timbavati this past July and can attest to the wicked drought they were going through. There were so many carcasses out there that we couldn't get the hyena's to bait due to it!
