Hello gang

I just found out about this site, so here I am. I am not to sure where exactly I would go to post or view what I am looking for and see what others have for sale. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the Equipment Exchange (EE) you'll have to ask for permission to join to the webmaster. There under the rimfire section, you'll see what people have to sell. There's all kinds, trust me, I bought my fair share from the EE. You cant beat an old Cooey repeater for price, and they shoot good too. If you want to sink a lot of money into a rifle, there's no end on what you can do to a Ruger 10/22. Just browse and see what you might like. This section usually has good threads on starter rifles.

P.S. What out on the EE, it gets addictive :D

I had the same question a few years back. I went with a really nice LOOKING .22 semi. After having nothing but headaches with that semi...I found the CGN webpage and was told in no uncertain terms to go out and get a Ruger10/22 I still love that gun...it just keeps on making me happy...and I got it off the EE.

Remington 597 more accurate out of the box than the 10/22 and won't break the bank.

Rugger 10/22 infinitely upgrade able with after market parts but like all things Rugger are more money for little to no gains over the competition.

It was put too me like this;
If you want to go out and use the gun as is, get a 597. If you want to pimp your gun with a stock,trigger set,fluted bull barrel,yada yada, get the 10/22.

Well said!

well both need trigger upgrades and will cost the same , both could use a new extractors to the 597 would be a couple dollers more .597 for So down to the barrel? take the 10/22 barrel of and sell it $40-$50 ,put that twards anouther ($140) = $90 and it will shoot hoops around the 597.
buy both ;)

I guess it all comes down to what you want...

My first semi .22 was Marlin 795. I've put around 1000 rounds through it and it only stops for the duds. It's a great rifle, it's a bare-bones gun that you can just shoot to your heart's content...ACCURATELY. This thing will out shoot a 10/22 by leaps and bounds, and it's quite inexpensive.

But if customizing is your thing, by all means go for the 10/22, you can find almost anything to put on that gun.

If you want a bit of both: Remington 597, I also own this gun, it fits right in between. Cost is in the middle, as is accuracy, and you can still find decent parts to customize it with.

A good friend shoots 'friendly' target competitions regularly and does better than most with his 597. The only mods are VQ hammer and extractor.

I've never seen a 10/22 shoot as well...

There are LOTS of other options for 22's out there (other than 10/22 and 597).

Why semi? How about bolt-action? If you want an accurate 22, try a bolt.

Savage makes awesome bolt-action rimfire rifles.

Good luck - SD

Welcome! "what to get?" might be one of the most common questions on this site, so be prepared for plenty of answers. There are tons of options when it comes to .22 semis. For a modest-priced .22 with an excellent reputation for accuracy, I'd go for the Marlin 795. I've been talking myself out of buying one of these for a few years now. (I own a 10/22 I rarely shoot) I'm not one who likes to modify, or junk-up a gun...so my 10/22 is very stock, complete with it's terrible factory trigger. So, unless you have $500+ to spend on a .22 semi., or want something older/used, the most common ones discussed around here that you can buy new are;

Remington 597
Ruger 10/22
Marlin 795

Remington~I've never been a fan of the 597s, I think they're kind of ugly. Supposed to be able to out-shoot 10/22s out of the box, but I can't verify.

Ruger 10/22~cruddy (heavy) trigger pull, does affect accuracy. They will digest a wide variety of ammo., including subsonics. Limitless aftermarket options, loads of info. online to trouble-shoot any issues if you have them. (I never have)

Marlin 795~the cheapest-looking/costing of all of these. Supposed to be quite accurate with a decent trigger. Fairly light, small for easy carry. Probably the .22 semi I should have gotten as my plinker. :) Might get one this year.

Anyone want to buy a 10/22? ;)

I've been doing alot of research the last couple weeks too for a .22 semi. What has already been said here pretty much sums up the reviews I've read. However i have decided to go with the Mossberg 702 Plinkster, pretty much the cheapest and best bang-for-the-buck type of gun, which is why I wanted a .22 in the first place.
Now I just have to decide if I want the regular blued barrel for $150.00 of the stainless steel for $170.00. Let us know which you decided to go for.
Oh and go to youtube for alot of good reviews.
Cheers.

My vote is for the Marlin 60 is you like tube magazines (no mags to lose or load). You can get a Spee-D-Loader for quick refills. Accuracy of these 60s as well as anything Marlin by the way, is superb. Reliability is equal to the best semi-autos.

Thanks gang for all the info, thinking I have some reading to do! Do not think at this point I want something new, was thinking about one with a bit of usage under its belt. A group of us like to go out target shooting and my riffle of choice thus far has been the 22 semi (coey or marlin I think). I am pretty new (within the past year) with the whole shooting scene, do not have a great handle on the different types at this point, but I am learning. I am thinking the Google and this site will become my two favorite places!

My personal favorite is the remington nylon 66. I grew up shooting one of these now me and my brother have both gone out and found one to make our own. The only drawback to these that I have found is that infernal tube magazine, and of course people who try to be nice and clean them :0 I have several thousand rounds through it never cleaned it and I dont intend to unless it starts misbehaving.

I'll trade you my 795 for you're 10/22 i love it but you can only get 10 round mags for them and I woud love some nice 25 rounder. I do love my 795 though a great little gun.

For what it is worth, I agree with .22LRGuys assessment of the rifles he named. However if you plan to buy used, and if you aren't very experienced, I would recommend you be very careful where you buy your used .22 semi auto. Be sure you can return it if you find that the reason it is for sale is that it has been damaged by the previous owner. And like most everything else in life, you will probably get something equivalent in value to what youy pay for it, or if used maybe less. Just my steel nickles worth of thoughts.
