My vote was for the 35 whelen for all the reasons previously mentioned. The other nice thing about the whelen is that you can load it with 357 pistol bullets for some close range chicken/rabbit opportunities. To the best of my knowledge this cannot be done with the other two.

Nope. For the 9.3 you have to use 9x18mm Makarov bullets from Hornady. I'm still waiting for some experimenter to give those a whirl and report back.

Didnt know that, Very cool! I shoot 158gr hornady XTPs over trailboss out of my whelen. I havent used them on game yet, but they shoot good on paper.

Like to be different in my choice of caliber and believe I need a mid range thumper
I have narrowed it down to 3

35 Whelen

9.3x62

I'm not sure how to make a pole but I do reload and it will be a bolt action rifle

Get the Whelen... Because your question should not be; "what is best?" but "what is enough?" More over, why is it enough? The Whelen can be loaded up or down, guns, ammo, brass and bullets are readily available, it is the cheapest to reload... It carries sufficient energy and good trajectory for all North American game... And it is versatile. If you want a little more, you can always ream to improved down the road. JMO.

35 Whelen is the easiest for brass, bullets and down loading for plinking, I have a custom on a Husky 98 Mauser with a 26" stainles McLennan heavy sporter weight. I should send it on its way, as I tending to love my 9.3x62 Huskarvarna, think my build the next one in an BRNO ZKK action?

I vote for the 35 Whelan if you want easy avail. or components

but I love the 9.3!!!
Dale Z!

Pretty sure that Klondike Bob on here has done that years ago, and paper patched 358 cast bullets work very well in the 1:14 twist Husqvarnas.

Ted

I wasn't as cool years ago as I became when I bought my 9.3x62 (and since I got a 300 H&H Pre-64 I'm ridiculously cool...just wait until I get a 7x57 - I'll be foolishly cool!). I probably missed the thread, or got side-tracked with some foolishness in the Main Battle Rifle forum.

There's also the .350 Rem Mag to consider if you're attracted to a shorter action, it's really just a .35 WSM (Whelen Short Mag) :)

The whelen is a sure classic, but I really love those .338 bullets, and the selection is awesome and the BC's of the caliber is pretty decent also. I vote .338-06
Unfortunately:cool: my thumper is a .375 Ruger Alaskan, mainly cause I foolishly sold my .338wm. I would hazard a guess as to there being a lot more Whelen factory guns and ammo than either of the others combined. But custom builds and reloading level the playing field. Really its less of an apples/oranges comparison to an apple/apple.

35Whelan all the way.

The whelan seems to shoot sooo well! I had to sell mine a few years ago, and I miss it!
Its a very accurate Combo!

At least in the rifles i've owned.
