Next Question...Which .270?

I guess we all agree that we couldn't live with the scope rings on that Mauser. Other than that, I would definitely get all the information and pictures on it and take a real hard look at it. It would be my choice over any of the cheap packages mentioned. However, I must admit that plastic stocks rate right in there with those high scope rings in my view!

Thanks again for all the input guys. I found a used .270 Remington 700 BDL with SPS synthetic stock. Leupold M8 4X fixed scope $450 plus shipping.

I think I did alright. Stayed within my $500 budget and got something better then just entry level.

you did good, thats a much better deal assuming the barrel is still in good condition.

the SPS stock isnt the greatest but you can help it a bit by bedding it yourself. or keep an eye on the EE for a future stock upgrade.

The shop that has the gun tells me the bore is clean. Minor bluing wear on the floor plate and barrel.

What is the issue with the SPS stock?

Thanks,
Dave

'clean bore' can be interpreted about 10 different ways. make sure the rifling is sharp, there is no frosting or throat wear, dings in the crown etc. if there is its not the end of the world - Rembo here on CGN has a stash of Remmy 700 barrels and charges very reasonable fees for the barrel and installation, and youd still end up with a good deal.

as for the stock, nothing wrong with them - its just solid plastic, thats all.
itll be fine. just bed it - you can do it as a project with your kid. youd have been advised to bed the Stevens/Savage stock anyway.

gitrdun posted a tutorial on bedding the Savage/Stevens stock, if memory serves it was pretty good. most bedding compounds have problems adhering to the plastic stocks, so make sure you use a tiny dremel router bit or small drill bit to drill a few holes at alternating angles from the bedding surface so that once your bedding compound dries there is a mechanical lock and it wont just peel/pop off. when you are applying your bedding compound use your spreader to squish the compound into these holes. i use strips cut out of the big red plastic Folgers coffee cans as spreaders.
its a cheap project and will definitely help any gun if done properly. all you need is some bedding compound (ive used JB Weld in the past as well so no need for expensive exotic compounds), some release agent (carnauba wax works best, or paste wax) and a little bit of time.

you can also remove the recoil pad and squirt a puff of expanding foam into the buttstock, then trim with a razorblade to get rid of the hollow sound/feel.

**edit
i cant for the life of me find the bedding thread by gitrdun. perhaps PM him and ask him where it is.

You did very well, esp considering the Leupold. To replace that rifle and scope new would be close to $1000.

I wouldn't worry about the bbl. If it looks good it probably is and if the crown needs fixing, is an easy/cheap job, besides very few modern rifles have shot out bbls.

I suggest having it bedded, floated and the trigger adjusted.

GOOD DEAL! :)

.

As for the bore I'm at the mercy of the gun shop on this one. I'm in Ontario, the gun is in BC. I guess I'll have to hope for the best and go from there.

"Bedding" is all new to me. I'll have to look into that. I suppose it's possible that it's already been done? How would I know?

Thanks for the info.

If I had known Wanstall's had that on their rack, I would have bought it in a split second for that price!!!...one of my hunting partners shoots a Remington 700 BDL in .270 Win with 130 grn. handloads and every deer he has shot with it has gone down quickly and has not gotten back up!...looks like you did pretty good. I would sell off the SPS stock on here and order a pillar-bedded BDL-type walnut or laminated stock from Boyd's that matches better with the bluing to replace it, but shoot the gun and see how it does for now...I had a leupold M8 6x that I replaced with a 3200 elite 2-7 x 33, nothing wrong with that Leupold, wish I still had it.

Gord.

p.s. your new rifle looks like an ADL, with the blind magazine, not a hinged floorplate like a BDL has.

It was advertised as an ADL but when I called Craig told me it is acutally a BDL.

Congrats! - That looks like a very decent find (excellent scope, too) at a super price ). Remington products are, as a rule, excellent shooters. (As was already mentioned, the components alone would be $$$ to replace)

Of course, we'll be expecting a range report...;)
