Next shotgun for LEO,s?

I see the 870 sticking around simply due to the versatility of launching both standard ammunition and less than lethal projectiles like rubber and bean bags.

Being Government Agencies, and based on past experience with the psychology of such organizations, I can see the shotgun being done away with. They require regular training to remain competent, and are seen as a hold over from the past. Additionally, they kick and are harder for smaller statured males and pretty much all female officers to operate. When the transition to the AR is complete, the shotgun will fade from general use, like the revolver. The fact that they're more flexible, cheaper, safer in urban settings, and fill an entirely different niche will be discounted by bureaucrats many of whom have never held, fired or carried one. Once they "wear out" they'll be done.

Except for beanbag and other less lethal options ...

There will always be a place for them in some capacity, but yes most are being replaced with carbines. Our local news did an article showing the transition in our city a couple of years back

How would the bean bags work against say hockey equipment?

I tried a few Anti-bear bean bag rounds against a plywood target. Went right through it. I hit a bear in the back end once and the bear just turned around and gave me the middle finger. Against a human, I think it would do some damage. The less lethal rounds, from what I was told, are not as severe.

I’ve seen some blow straight through a 2x4 and others that barely made it out the end of the barrel. Rounds don’t seem to be consistent. That was a long time ago though.

I know several old cops who remember the time that if things got ugly they went home and retrieved their own duck guns.
That was a time when there was a lot more violent crime than we have now... yet today they’re not happy unless every officer has military grade weaponry in the car.

Enter the...patrol carbine

speaking to a few friends who just started their police careers this year; they weren't even trained on shotguns, nor are they issued anymore. Strictly Glocks and C8's going forward..
