Unless you are shooting a lot of 'real' full power loads (i.e. factory magnum loads from AE, S&B, Remington are not really full power loads) a Smith will be fine, so just get the one that appeals to you and have fun shooting. I've had a few 629s and a Redhawk. Either a 5"-6.5" 629 or 5.5 Redhawk would be nice. Haven't shot the Taurus but lots of guys like them too.

I'm just prepping my brand spanking new 629 Classic with a full underlug 6.5" barrel and so far I'm a little spooked. It feels like it's full of sand.
Since I've lost all respect for S&W because of their BS, my expectations are pretty low but where the 29 felt like a Swiss watch, this 629 feels like rusty barn gate. But I might be a tad bitter.

i remember reading a thread about warranty issues over shooting hand loads.that worried me.was that your post?

:p Yup, right after posting that little piece of #####iness. It's much better. I thought I had started another post with pics but between the whiskey and the hour it looks like I didn't.
 
If you can find one, a Dan Wesson in 44 Mag will scratch that itch for you.

I have a 44-VH8 that I absolutely love. Looks like a million bucks and eats full power loads all day long.

Yup, use handloads get no warranty no matter what. Not that it matters because if any live ammo is fired in a Smith and Wesson and something happens, S&W says too bad it's the fault of the ammo, go talk to them our guns are flawless.
 
I highly recommend you at least try a S&W 29/629 before you decide

I have that special cool, but it only comes in a snub nose:rockOn:. Top is a Redhawk, middle is a 629, and the bottom is a 624 in 44 special. I have shot 44 mag for years, and my arthritis is getting to the point that I can't handle the torque of full loads, so am starting to load down. But the 44 special shoots sweet.

Redhawk Hunter is a nice 44mag. Comes with scope rings and integral dovetails which is a bonus if you want to see how far you can lob them.... :)

I'm sort of looking for a square butt (have a round butt), as I bought a square butt Hogue stock thinking it was the conversion stock. I rectified by ordering the proper conversion stock, but now I have a stock for a square butt N frame...so I'll HAVE to buy a 29; right? Anything wrong with that logic? :)
 
Wow that one on EE comes with some smoking hot ammo. Did think you could get Buffalobore or Grizzly up here.

Lol! Nothing wrong that I can see.

Myself I have bought probably a dozen different stocks in trying to find something that makes round butts appealing to me. I like square butts and have settled firmly on VZ Grips tactical diamonds series. Love em to death. Unfortunately they don't make a conversion one and I can only use their round butt ones on smaller guns, since they are quite small. On a full size 629 they feel like holding onto a baseball bat by the knob on the end.

Ever thought about a model 27 or 28?
 
.357 Rem mag N frames right? I have a GP100 4.2 (also wears Hogue hardwoods) and I really like it, I've never even thought of shooting .357 out of an N frame Smith...hmmm...off to google. (I have a feeling this isn't going to end well {for the bank account;)})
 
After shooting 50 rnds through my used wood grip Super Blackhawk 7 1/2" in 44mag, I would go bigger. S&W X frame, in 460 or 500. I reload, so its a bit cheaper than shooting factory rounds and loading down is not an issue. I was pleasantly surprised with the controlability of the Blackhawk without a brake/compensator with full power factory loads.
