I do not want to start a war, I do not mean any disrespect to Ruger GP 100 owners. I have simply had two bad experiences and I'm tired of wasting my time.

I'm looking for a current production good quality .357 Mag. I ordered a Ruger GP 100 and it came all scratched up and looking like junk. I had to wait a while for it to come so I was not happy. So I sent it back and waited for another. It had a long delay but finally it arrived. It came unfinished in three parts of the frame where the cylinder goes. Because of this it was all rusted up. There were also some really bad tooling marks, which was not as a big of a deal for me and a few small scratches.

I'm really disappointed that two of these could come in such crappy condition. If they let this kind of stuff slide then I'm not overly impressed. I don't want to bad mouth any GP 100 fans but clearly I am having no luck.

What else would you guys suggest for a good double action, current production, .357 mag?

I would prefer blued plus I heard the GP's where stronger, that is why I stayed away from the Smith 686, but maybe it is the better option?

Are there any other options besided the 686 even if it costs more?

Thanks

I'm sure all the Ruger and Smith fans will jump in and bark about it, but Taurus has been around for YEARS, and I'm personally saving up for a Raging Bull .44. Their .357s sure do look nice!

The Taurus large frame revolvers are good quality for the price, and have 7 round and 8 round cylinders in their lines. I've noticed some small machine marks on the ones I've handled, but really at that price I don't expect it to be finished as well as the $1300 S&W equivalent.

Best bet is find a used model 27.

586 or 686 will stand all the .357 mags you would care to shoot. Taurus revolvers are nice for the price but unless their dealer support has improved in recent years yiou are out of luck if you need parts/service. Ruger quality has obviously slipped in recent years given your experience--they used to be better than that.

To bad to hear about the issues with your GP100's. Personally, love mine . I think it looks better then the S&W, hopfully you have better luck with there firearms then Ruger.

A Taurus 669 has the great dishonour of being the only gun I have ever purchased for my collection that I ended up selling. Traded, actually, in pure disgust. It was the stinkiest piece of crap I have ever shot.

Unless you can come up with the cash for a Korth, I think you are looking at the Wessons. Not that many people making double action revolvers, these days.

My stainless gp100 is prwtry good in terms of tooking marks i honeatly cojldnt be happier and im sorry youve had a bad experience with them. Were yours blued or atainleas?

Since you have soured on Ruger, I would recommend something in a gently used S&W 27 or 28. A Colt Trooper Mark III or IV should be what might suit you as well.

+1 for the Taurus comment. I bought a model 96 (knock off of the smith 17) and it had a broken firing pin, called taurus up, they wouldn't ship to canada as per most companies, had no record of my gun in their system, and after all that they sent the wrong firing pin. Ended up just making a new one instead of waiting for the bs. That being said, I really enjoy the gun, shoots just as well in my opinion as most others.

Both I received were blued, possibly I should try the Stainless? I have just always preferred dark colored guns myself.

Shoot, those smiths look nice but I really just want to like the GP 100. I have even bought all the accessories for it already. Maybe I should try the stainless instead.
