I bought one of these kits a couple of years back after a broadhead mishap almost put an end to my Moose camp.

I recently had a chance to use it as I carry it in my first aid kit.

I cut my hand with hatchet out at ice shack(about an hour from town).

I used disinfectant swab and put 3 staples in a inch long fairly deep cut....I think I could see bone.

Staples were easy to put in and held great. When I got back to town I didn't even bother with trip to hospital as I had a tetanus booster last year.

This is a must have for any first aid kit.

The only draw back is it seems to be designed more for wounds where there is alot of meat or flesh. When your close to bone it will leave some of the staple sticking up, but if you put a bandage over it they will lay flat.

While you get "Internet Tough Guy" points for closing your own wound when you were only an hour from town, the risk of infection without cleaning the wound out properly is fairly high. If you have ever had sutures before, you may have noticed that the person putting them in probably spent far more time irrigating the wound then actually putting the sutures in. The reason is to make sure that it is nice and clean before closing it up and creating a perfect environment to grow all sorts of hebiegeebies. While it is good that your tetanus shot is up to date, it should be the least of your worries.

That's the dangerous thing with these kits, while they are intended to be used while in a remote (ie days away) location, anyone and their brother can buy one. I don't disagree with them being available, but they really need to be used properly, and with proper instruction.

Very handy in a remote location and I have one BUT the wound cleaning point can't be emphasized enough. I have had to go back and get a wound cut open and cleaned TWICE because all the crap wasn't cleaned out properly by the doc that did the orignal (and second) suturing.
Cabelas doesn't sell the antibiotics I needed for that infection....... :D

LOL,

The funny thing is.

I have had sutures before. with and without local anesthesia and putting in this staples is far less painful.

I guess if I don't post in coming weeks you know I died of infection...
