Night Vision Chat Thread - Ask Us Anything

Question: may have been answered before but I am a mall ninja. Just curious as to your recommendations for something that comes with a head peice but could also be mounted to helmet if need be. I'm talking something that is one step above the call of duty night visions that came as special edition with the game but below military lol.

I will add you get what you pay for and I'm half joking half not with my question. Something in the 500-700 dollar range. I was actually surprised with the tech in the amazon/call of duty night vision set ups. It would just be to have "just inncase" and would collect dust with all the other mall ninja crap I own.

Digital night vision but it's essentially junk without an IR light source. Night vision isn't worth it until you spend more coin.

Night vision isnt cheap, and digital night vision just doesn't compare in any way shape or form. Its like showing up at a formula 1 race with a honda civic, sure they both have engines and 4 wheels, but they are entirely different. Buying a good flashlight will be far more functional than digital night vision

There are plenty of YouTube channels showing the effectiveness of digital NV while hunting hogs, coyotes, and other animals at night. These hunts would not have been possible with a flashlight.

Personally I have a thermal and digital.

My digital NV is very effective in low light, and with an IR Illuminator I can see 200 yards clear as day in the dead of night.

Sir, I protest, if you need an illuminator to see with your system just give it up! To any other user with night vision in the vicinity you might as well be ringing a dinner bell!

I agree with you however the gentleman inquiring about cheaper night vision said it wasn't for tactical purposes so needing supplemental IR lighting wouldn't be a deal breaker ... and then the fact you don't have to worry about nuking your nods when your buddy shines a light in your face is nice as well.

Personally though I wouldn't waste my money on digital. Hopefully at some point the tech will get better and cheaper.

Maybe I misunderstood.

I was talking about hunting not a two way range.

For tactical situations an IR illuminator is less desirable.

I understand that by the very nature of the devices, the google mounted devices have to shine light into the user's eyes. Looking at some digital night vision video recordings, it seems the glow is fairly prominent when viewed from the side of the user. (these are videos taken a few meters from the NOD users). Is there any signature when seen at some distance? Do people wearing NODs have a glow visible to other NOD users?
As already mentioned, eye cups, if they work for you can reduce splash from your occular lens.

Another thing to know is how visible are your illuminated optics from the objective lens end to other peoplekind with image intensifier NODs.

Eg. My PA SFP illuminated 1x6 is to my Gen 3 PVS14 unlit from lowest to mid intensity. After that it becomes visible.

I’m looking for a set up for around 3k it’s possible? (Not including helmet)
