Night Vision vs Thermal Imaging

Armasight is an American company that use a variety of Image Intensifier.
Night vision is judged primary by the image intensifer and secondary to the housing manufacture.

Most high-end American company will use
Exelis (formerly ITT) and L-3 (formerly Litton), they are considered top tier stuff in terms of NV. Unfortunately accessing those outside of US are hard due to ITAR. The export version are limited to FOM <1600 (if you're a LE/MIL customer ie Australian and Canadian Army).

Kato'd is a Russian company, their high end IIT are very comparable to Exelis & ITT's but more expensive compared to equivalent US IIT. AFAIK GSCI and Newkon Optiks uses Kato'd for their Gen 3 stuff.

Photonis is a Dutch company, they make very high end Gen 2 that are comparable to current US Gen 3 commericial stuff, they're also more expensive compared to US.
Ekran is another Russian company that makes Gen 2 IIT, the quality range from typical Gen2 to Photonis' commericial lineup.
Armasight does use Phtonis and Ekran stuff, so far I have no heard of an easy way to distinguish Photonis from Ekran in their Gen2 SHD (Super High Performance) aside from opening the unit.

What are your thoughts on Newcon? I am looking at getting either their Bino's or a mono PVS14c...

I am finally in a spot to get myself a nice expensive weapon sight that can allow me to see in the dark. I know that I will be spending 5 -10 grand. I have done some reaserch on night vision products. I know little about thermal imaging however. What's the best bang for your buck? What's a more useful tool or is it situation based? I like the fact that thermal can see through fog.

Also do you recommend a weapon, hand or head mounted unit?

Nate

what did you end up getting if anything yet? I did this: http://www.tacticalimports.ca/newcon-nvs14-gen-3-milspec-monocular-p-131.html

Ok ok, I was going to go with the first option TVPP suggested. Since the original post I have done a tone or reading. I wanted to go with the GS 14 at around 2600$ but I got to looking at the PVS 14 twice as much but I wont have to upgrade. Spend less cash in the long run. Now I haven't actually purchased it yet. I will put the order in shortly for the PVS 14, looks like it will take a few weeks for the distributor to do there thing. I will follow up and do a review of the PVS 14 and post it up one this thread.

Really the selling point for the PVS is that you can also mount it on a rifle and combined with an EOtech! Martha you got yourself a ...... an amazing zombie gun;)

This youtube vid sums it up!!

What about the AN/ PVS4 that is made in Pakistan? It is a licenced copy of the US model. They claim to be up grading this model.

Pretty informative thread......... :)

Those are some hefty prices for that type of gear...............But in reality I can defeat thermal and FLIR imaging for less then $50.00............and have done so.........just sayin......... ;)

A bullet in the back of the head will defeat most anything!

Do tell, please. Me and the rest of the military/LEO INTEL community would be very interested to know.

Not very hard really.

Common knowledge a space blanket will mask your thermal image, and IR treated material in the right camo will mask you from IR sensors.

Combine both and you can defeat the IR/Thermal imagers.

A local RCMP ERT unit was witness to this.
