Introduction
Finally had the opportunity to spend time with a 1-8×24. The 30mm NX8, not the 34mm ATACR.
A few range trips and one week moose hunting on the east coast. Stalking and hiding from dark to dark.
Positives
In short, I love it. NF quality and ruggedness. 1-8 flexibility. Mil reticle perfect for my need with bdc hashmarks. But there are characteristics that may not suit you, I'll try to describe below.
Turrets
Capped windage as I want. Wasn't sure about exposed elevation but did not move while hunting, thanks to it's stiffness. Both turrets rotation are perfect.
The 0.2mil (near 2/3moa) click makes for a gross zero but okay.
The illumination knob feels mushy but clicks well. Nice design with off between every position.
Magnification limitations
The 24mm objective divided by the 8x power gives a 3mm exit pupil. I'm familiar with the theory but never experienced it so intensively. In lowlight it seemed like an hindrance above 4x. When dialing up the power it goes fine to 4x then it really gives you less to see.
During daytime that's not an issue but it requires to have your eye in the perfect position. The eyebox is pretty small at 8x.
Reticle
The FFP reticle appears to be smaller as you decrease magnification, we understand that. Below 4x you can't use the reticle mil marks. No problem, at 200m it's nice to be over 4x. Below 2x it's hard to see your zero aiming point, even the donut around it. Unless you turn on the powerful illumination, then it's like an Aimpoint.
Mounting
What's the name of the center "ball" where the turrets are? The NX8 has a huge ball, notably lower than usual. Using a NF unimount A190 I had clearance issues that required the push the mount to the front of the scope until the 20moa cant cleared the "ball" bottom.
A 2.5-20 user reported the steep angle of the objective bell caused issues too but maybe that's more obvious.
