Hi,

In Canada any province , which generation of nightvision binoculors/scopes can you buy.

Are they legal to use, and where you can find them.

Thanks.

Most consumer level nightvision optics are Gen1. Canadian Tire had them on sale here in Toronto last week or the week before that.

curious to whats it's going to be used for, if you're in quebec you cant shoot past sunset

This is were I got mine from.

Ipicked up a pair of the Night Owl binos form CT, mostly for fun. They were on sale and I had a few hundred $$ in GC's anyway.

They are Gen 1 with IR illumination. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I can see quite clearly out to about 100 yards if it's not foggy. Fog kills them, but it does that to regular binos, too.

I certainly don't "need" them but it was fun glassing one of my deer holes at night, I coudl see the deer clearly.:)

Yes, legal to own and a lot of fun. You don't want to have any with you if you have any form of hunting equiptment though, the two do not mix.

I was at a local gun show this fall and a fellow selling them said that Gen 1 and Gen 2 versions were avaliable to public with no restrictions. However Gen 3 nightvison equipment was restricted to law enforcement only or licensed security companies with the proper permit.

I have not idea if this was sales pitch (to sell the Gen 1 & 2 equip he had) or whether it is the truth but it would bear looking into or perhaps. I would be curious as to what specifications cause a particular night vision to be fit in the Gen 3 catagory.

I nearly bought a Russian Gen 2 night vision scope at Cabelas a few years back from their bargain barn. I decided not to because it was to far to hassle with if they did not work, but then later I found out about US restrictions on exporting scopes and was glad i did not buy it. It would have been good to use on the coyotes that walked the perimeter of goat pens at night.

Last I'd heard, the issues were not so much to do with what we are 'allowed' to have, as they are with what the US State Dept. will allow to be exported.

AFAIK, they mostly would like for their good stuff to not be used against them somewhere.

I got to play with a set that was used by the pilots to fly helo's at night. Wow!

Cheers
Trev

It is true, anything gen 2+ or less is fine. Anything more than that is a no go.
I have some Gen 3+ stuff, 86 lines of resolution... you can read a book in perfect darkness with the IR light, and can walk around outside just like its a green day. Its a blast.

No need for the US stuff, Newcon is canadian !

I've looked around a bit, a domestic gen3 PVS-14 type is like 6400$

I think they have their hands full with other issues at the moment:

so do these NV binos and such use a spotlike, like how video cameras with nightvision video do?
How bout those fancy heat vision(i think its heat, i'm not too good at listening sometimes) cameras that you always see on TV for night time chases from a helicopter? are those available to the public?

You are not telling what the anticipated use will be. Weapon mount? Head mount? Hand held? Distance? Willing to use an illuminator (mostly IR) or you want to go to 'starlight'?

There is no restriction for possession of night vision equipment in Canada. Obviously, as long as it is not stolen.

There is some very good quality surplus night vision here in Canada. As with anything electronic, the better you want, the more it's going to cost.

The highest resolution available at this time is 72 lp/mm. Any piece with this resolution will be $3500+. There is some surplus Canadian scopes that are considered gen1, however are at least as good as any US AN/PVS4 gen2, for quality of optics. They are rated at 28 lp/mm. If I was shopping for more NV, I would ensure this would be the minimum resolution.

There are a few dealers around that have some quality stuff in stock. I will leave the search up to you.

You may want to check here on this site for further threads involving NV. This issue has been discussed at length and therefore the info is available.

I have Gen III scope with zoom controls and few other things the scope was bought in Germany and brought to canada the customs didnt know what exactly it was because of the zoom I also took out the battery pack so they thought it was some sort of camera attachment
The dumb ass morons but hey if you are willing to burn 15 grand what the heck right
I wouldnt recommend to take it hunting either specially that it has a digital range compensator built into it
Scope is designed for 50 cal rifle though
Scope also has a compensator for clarity specially the focus for different ranges
