NM M1A ready for distance....

Are you going to handload for this baby? It would be great to see what it can really do with a tunned load.

I intend to reload with 155 and 167 Scenars and maybe see what the Lapua Lockbase 170 gr ( factory ammo from Lapua is the most accurate i shot from my Nemesis) produce, the Berger and Mk will be giving it a try... JP.

Yes you are absolutely right, What literature have you sourced on marksmanship?

It's in several of my books but the best information is from "The complete book of US Sniping" by Peter R Senich published 1988, so not up to date for now, but good for the M-14's previous life as the "Sniper's Baby". At the time of printing(1988), it was still the Tool of the trade for the US Army, still hadn't been replaced by the bolt gun,. A whole chapter to the M-14 alone, with lots of great combat photos.

Those 155's are deadly in a 1/12" twist standard barrel. The first 200 rounds through my Chincom were these. Would the Scenar-L in 175 grains be a good bullet for the 800 meter test? Your barrel 1/11"??

1/11 is right, i will be trying those MK 175 but the Lapua 170 gr Lockbase are new to me and i am really impress by them... 1/10 barrel of my Nemesis is at is best with the 155 Scenars ( pet load)... Will keep you posted... JP.

Ok I didn't even realize there was a 170:redface:, I thought you misquoted the 175 lol. Match ammo is definitely not my forte.

Those Lapua 170 HPS ( high precision sniper... BC of .525 ) are one of the most sought after bullet by LEO in Europe, kind of the equivalent of the 168 GMM... JP.

H2O I haven't really followed the re emergence of the M-14 platform for Afghanistan and Iraq, but I'm feeling it is for the DMR role, and this is much like Soviet sniper philosophy from the Cold War. Semi-Auto, scope sighted marksman,... deployed throughout infantry companies and platoon's.
The US counterpart however,... concentrated on Sniping as a separate entity acting in pairs as Scout/Snipers, to be deployed by unit commanders down to the platoon level, but these sniper's were true long range marksman, not merely DMR's. The Max effective range for a Soviet Dragunov equipped DMR sniper, was only the good starting ranges where a US sniper would like to engage due to his superior marksmanship ability and his equipment and because distance and stealth was his best protection while harassing superior numbers.

The M-14/XM21 was definitely wrung out in Vietnam and later years. Better optics now and ballistic computation would stretch it even a little further maybe, but the 762 has limitations. The Leatherwood scope was a leap forward in its day, but the magnifications offered throughout the ballistic come-ups during bracketing the target was quick, but is inferior to today's sniping optics and ballistic compensation.

I too will try to push my SAI NM -out to about 600 yards anyway - this Spring. Have a CASM mount and will put a NF NXS on top. Figure 41.5 of 4895 pushing a 168g SMK is the way to go but the question is 'what brass to use ?" This platform is hard on brass and I don't want to really kill my new Lapua in 4 reloads but don't want Federal (too soft) so maybe it has to be Winchester. RTS, L4TR or other '14 reloaders - any ideas ?

I did finalized my scope business on my NM M1A, went with a S&B 3X12X50 Klassik FFP L7 reticle... This rifle desserve to get top glass as the accuracy is there so this should be the final set up for it, when snow go away i will try it at various distance up to 800 metres, there i will be able to assess the real potential of my NM... I will go as far my rifle+scope+ammo will take me, this year, i am opening up at our private range some extra stations from 1200 to 1500 metres ( by backing up the start), when i lose the 24X24 paper, that gonna be it, this will be a fun summer with those new distances... JP.

LC brass is what I used to use, its very strong. Winchester brass should get 4-5 reloadings since your rifle is an NM and its chamber should be no more then 1.632 most likely a bit less.

My NM chamber is right on at 1.631 ( got the certified paper from SA)... JP.

Nice! That's a beaut , can't wait to see what she can do. I'd like to take mine out that far one day, we'll see what the fixed 10x will let me do

My scope set at 9x can shoot well at 100yards, but after 300 the crosshairs just cover up my 8x11 sheet completely. I'm thinking an m305 shooting 1.5-2 inches at 100y with 10x fixed scope should reliably hit 16x16 plates/gongs out to 400y easily. Should be able to get twice those results if you post a lot on the internet.

There are very very very very few true MOA M-14 platform rifles. I can't wait to see Caramel post up that his is pushing 3/4 MOA.

And by true, I mean that can hold it at all distances out to 900 meters.

I suspect if i am to succeed at shooting sub MOA with a semi auto rifle on very long distances, it could be with my FNAR 308, Deon March 3X24X42 and top reload setup... JP.
