No end to SKS imports yet new source for them is Russia however quality SKSs that we were getting over few years out of Ukraine are finished due to war

There are still SKS coming to Canada out of Russian Federation. It is not the end of SKS imports to Canada however it is a real end of quality imports till the new source is found. You probably have seen SKSs that came out of Russia this year. They are for sale here and there, they are "Scrape Yard Condition". All of this rifles are EX-Venezuelan "Militia, Jungle Farmers" lease returns that were returned to Russia after the lease had ended. They were repainted in Russia, some were counter bored. They are characterized by rougher shape stocks, barbecue paint finish, signed of rust and brownish stained bayonets. Most obvious distinguishing mark is small laser engraving on the right side of the receiver. If you are looking for junk gun to throw around they are OK but do not expect quality

There does appear to be a decrease in the level of quality in SKSs.....I looked at some at Canadian Tire the other day , lots of black paint being used on those rifles , but the price has not changed any , they were priced at around 175 each , all hardwood stocks with black bayos and bolts , no laminates ........

Once this Ukraine nonsense blows over within a few months imports will resume and I'll bet anything that after the dust settles dealers will pick these up MUCH cheaper, will that be reflected in the selling price to the public? Doubt it.

As others have mentioned hopefully when this Ukraine thing settles down it will be back to business as usual....Lets face it the Russians want to sell them and we want to buy them everybody should be happy...lol.

Does anyone know what the laser mark looks like?

These are the markings. The writing is under the Gas tube and handguard and is not seen. The diamonds are in various places. I have dealt with a few of these and while not the prettiest at first when you clean them up the look a lot better. Function wise they are in good shape as far as the ones I have seen.

Oh well, with at least 80000 SKS rifles floating around in Canada, and many of them on the EE, you are bound to come across a good one from a fellow CGN member some time.

If you check the EE, people are asking bigger money for nice SKS's. I saw one going cheap and it was described as "shooter quality". Maybe it was one of these ugly new ones. Wish I didn't sell my mint ones.

I got one of these "junk" sks's and it cleaned up pretty good. The stock I replaced because it looked and felt like something that had washed up on the beach and had to de-rust the trigger group springs but it functions great and is pretty accurate. I'm not sure why the sks has such a bad rep for accuracy because mine does quite well. Could it be from damaged rifling in some of the bores?

Yeah.... I'm not buying the laser engraving is an indication of the "lesser grade" sks. I have seen engraved Refurb's that are rough though. I bought a laser engraved receiver and barrel sks a month ago. The Finish is Blued, not paint, the numbers all match and the hardwood stock is like new.

The laser engraving may indicate Molot issue/export. Most of the current 91/30's on the market are Molot rifles (Russian) and have a laser engraving on the bottom of the bolt handle (diamond with three letters) and under the hand guard "Made in Russia at Molot" - or at least something like that.

These markings were first seen on 91/30 sniper rifles imported about two summers ago. The only 91/30s currently on the market without these marking are from Belarus.

90%+ of Soviet SKS were being shipped out of the Ukraine or at least via the Ukraine (crates were marked as such with an international marking - indicating they were chemically and or heat treated for Bugs in the wood).

It could be possible that some of these sks rifles are now being released by Molot.

Interesting enough about three years ago Molot was designated to destroy millions of surplus rifles to meet UN commitments. Interestingly enough they started releasing "New Produced and Marked Rifles" for "sporting purpose" that just appeared to be of WWII and pre WWII production??? Coincidence? I think not.

I had to laugh at the above pic of an SKS - someone lost a bayonet....

Now

There are not too many Russian policies that I am happy with, but I do approve of this one!:)

These SKS are from Molot - Same as the standard 91/30's and 91/30's rifles.

I just love how Molot produced a 1950's "replica" SKS rifles in 2013 for sporting purposes!!!!
