No end to SKS imports yet new source for them is Russia

ljones - Thank you for the correction in regards to Norinco. I knew they were the exporter but I thought they owned and run some factories as well and were involved with R&D. Probably something I read on the internet and we all know what is on the internet isn't always true.

Who had 1300 SKS in Edmonton? Milarm - One order of 500, second order 300 and another order 500 (through two suppliers - probably Tradex and Marstar) these were all Russians they also had some Chinese not included in this number and these are also all sold out. They are trying to source another 500 SKS with little to moderate luck willing to get Chinese or Russian. I guess one order from last spring/summer they got crates and when they opened them the crates had no dividers, just rifles on their sides with cardboard between each row - I guess that way you can fit a lot more rifles per crate.

P&D had a bunch of SKS rifles but they are all sold out the last time I checked (one week ago) - actually they had no milsups, which is a big surprise because they were always good for SVT's, Mosins, K98's and SKS rifles for years whenever one model was available. I was told they just can't get them and are waiting for stock. This seems to be common, as tradex, SFRC and many other dealers are "Sold Out" of pretty standard milsups.

Wholesale, Cabelas and Can Tire Leduc also had a bunch of milsups. Quality is always a crap shoot.

Cabelas last summer had ###'d out lami's but I have only heard good things about the majority of their last batch.
Can Tire generally had good kit but I have seen some junk/painted rifles.
Wholesale the same thing as Can Tire- bought some 91/30's and Czech 7.62x39 at their boxing day sale.

I don't know about other Edmonton dealers.

Bashaw is always good but out of the way. Shooters Choice in Calgary had a great selection of Milsups last spring (bought quite a few) but they sold out in about a month and have never had good stocking since. I know their competitor also had a good selection of K31's.

Frontier seems to have the best stock, but they are asking a fair chunk of change for their Chinese SKS rifles.

Then again it depend on what you want. If using a Tapco stock - you don't need to worry about an ###'d out stock. I had one guy insisting that he wanted a lami stock and was willing to pay the premium price. Then when I gave him the rifle he was all excited in regards to telling me about the custom stock he bought for it. It wasn't my rifle anymore.

They do R&D and they do run some factories. They are involved in firearms production. However the Type 56 SKS's were already in existence before Norinco came into existence. They modified some of the existing SKS's for the Western Market as well as being the export entity the Chinese government uses to export firearms to the West. Thus the Type 56 SKS's in the US being marked as Norinco firearms. However they may have been involved in the research and development and production of numerous Chinese firearms, the SKS was not one of them. (Although I cannot say for sure about the Stamped receiver or Cast receiver SKS's that were a failure. Not sure when these were developed off hand and if Norinco was involved with that. That just proves the SKS design was already the best and not to mess with it) As such the moniker Norinco SKS is misleading. It is the Chinese Military Type 56 exported or modified by Norinco.
