***Warning!!!! Long winded post to follow but please read.****

I was at Mission Rod and Gun today shooting my Norc M-14 after letting everyone know I was planning on shooting semi-auto and intending on using a loaded magazine and was going to shoot at the far right of the line out of consideration of others (no RSO present).

While I was shooting an RSO showed up and I was informed I could only load my magazine one round at a time. After a philosophical discussion we agreed I could continue to shoot with a loaded magazine as long as I continued to do it in an appropriate manner (no rapid fire, all rounds hitting the target stand, etc).

While shooting I ran into Iain Gough-Townsend (the club president) who expressed a willingness to loosen up the rules but suggested an organized group would be better as it would allow a more coherent and standardized approach including our own RSOs. He even said such an organization would have access to club funding.

I figure it is time to s##t or get off the pot. I am trying to organize a Service Rifle Club at the Mission Gun Club and even have a few of our (future) members qualified as the RSO. I can see a lot of potential in terms of a training facility to shoot longer distance (300 yards) and even have access to some club funding. Who knows, perhaps even organize training events/clinics etc. Let's create a home for those of us who like and shoot semi-auto rifles.

I am trying to make this a positive thread in order to improve conditions at Mission and encourage new members. Please don't let this thread degenerate into past experiences or finger pointing.

I am trying to gauge interest by touching base with those CGNers who are Mission members and those in the Lower Mainland who would be interested in becoming members should this become reality.

UPDATE 09-08-31
My apologies on the delay. It is entirely my fault. Iain has been very supportive throughout this process. Anytime I send him an e-mail the reply is within hours. Between the two kids at home (5 month and 2 1/2 years, other commitments, and lots of OT at work I finally made it out to Mission last week for the first time since June. I am currently preparing to make a presentation to the MDRG Exectutive on Sept 29 to gain approval for service rifle.

So far my presentation will cover that Service Match Conditions is a nation wide recognized shooting event with participants from the Canadian Forces (Regular and Reserve, Police, Foreign Military, and civilians). These matches take place across Canada.

MDRG would be an excellent place to practice most of the stages. These practices could be set up throughout the year and generate new members and more income (through regular memberships and guest fees) for the club throughout the year.

Most competitors use the AR-15 to compete, which is a restricted rifle. Due to requirements put out by the CFO in BC. We are required to have an active gun club membership to purchase restricted firearms and apply for permits to transport.

Service rifle is a disciplined shooting sport and is not spray and pray. Will not cause damage to club property. (I hope this will appeal to those who hate semi-autos).

Service Rifle will be a self-contained discipline and will strive to have their own RSO's.

Service Rifle is not limited to semi-automatic rifles. The Canadian Rangers compete with Lee Enfields and this discipline would not discriminate against anyone wishing to learn.

Seperate events could be held to widen interest such as vintage military service rifle matches.

So far that is the list I could come up with. If anyone has any other suggestions please send me a PM. I will be away on a course in Ottawa from Sept 14-25 so I may be a little slow responding to PMs at that time.

Update 09-09-29

We just got back from the executive meeting. The proposal went over well. There were a number of concerns brought up but I think we were able to address them. One of the concerns that come up was the schedule is booked solid for special events on weekends. If service conditions becomes a discipline as the "new kid on the block" we might end up getting the leftovers in terms of weekends for organizing training days and may have to resort to organizing events on weekdays as well. I hope to hear back soon as to what the next step is and how well the proposal was received.

If anyone is interested in taking part or helping out please send me a PM.

09-09-30

I just heard my proposal was well received by the executive. They plan on re-visiting this single shot rule shortly and I anticipate hearing back soon.

09-11-27

I have just received word at last Tuesday's Executive Meeting a proposal was passed to completely rewrite the range rules to reflect the changes suggested to ease the restrictions on magazine fed firearms.

Whatever that means I think it's good. I haven't heard anything else but it will be brought up at the AGM on Dec 7 which I will be attending. Hopefully I will have good news to post afterwards.

10-05-06

Things are plodding along. We have been asked to set up an RSO course specific to Service Rifle. Hopefully everything is up and running in time for 2011...

After 18 months of seeing the executive plod along and delay my attempts to introduce a service rifle discipline I have given up. I've been beaten by the Fudds. I am letting my membership expire at the end of the year. I recently picked up an affiliate membership at the Abbotsford Fish and Game Club which will be upgraded to a full membership at the end of December. They are a more open-minded club and after licking my wounds will try to be more involved with my new club.

For those that have followed this thread for so long I wish to apologize for my lack of success. If anyone else wants to take this on you are more than welcome. I am tired of banging my head against a wall!

I'm a new member at mission and have been in Service condition shooting since 1985 after a long absence in the discipline I have started to shoot SR rifle, pistol and tac rifle again. My only issue is "time". I don't have a lot of it. I would be interested in participating and assisting where and when I can. Good on you for taking it on.

Hey Verne,

I figured I might as well step up to the plate and get something organized instead of just complaining and thought CGN is the best place to do it!!! hahaha

SR at MDRG

As SGT Schultz would say , verry interesting. I was thinking - talking about this at the provincials this weekend . The most difficult shooting is the position shooting at 200 and 300 . Nicely covered at mission. I know one qualified RSO who would be interested. I would be in to help as well. One big caveat as far as i'm concerned, Service Conditions is not an excuse for uncontrolled rapid fire. I hope this pans out.

I agree that is has to be controlled fire. If anyone wants to fire as fast as they can and targets are optional... I don't think any gun club would tolerate that.

Please spread the word... the more people we have the more likely this will work.

x2 on Iain G-T being a good guy.
He used to be a metal fabricator, and I worked with him briefly a few years ago.

Anyway, good on you Homer76 for taking on this. I hope that you/we can build this into something big. Vokes range in Chilliwack is a top-notch range, but access is tight. Having Mission as a place to practice regularly would be great.

"I hear nothing, I see nothing, I know nothing!" (In my best Sgt Schultz voice). Loved that show.

Good for you guy's at mission

:50cal:

I applaud the president for keeping an open mind.

I am at the Chilliwack club and service rifle and the such are permitted at full semi mode. It is fun and that what guns are too shoot.

Good for you guy's at mission, continue the cause. We will be introducing IDPA transition from pistol to rifle soon as well, great stuff, great sport.

As a very die hard Service Rifle shooter and Mission RSO I'd be more than happy to help out in organizing a Mission Service Rifle Club. I doubt we would be able to do any rundowns but I think its the positions that everyone needs work on

To be honest I started reading your post with dread wondering which one of the guys lambasted you LOL! Glad it all worked out...but seriously count me in!!!

WOW He has gave me #### a few times in the Past!!! I'm glad to hear he has more positive input lately.
I was talking to Longshot about the possibility of doing some SR stuff there, He is interested, So maybe we can get something going soon, Cause Mission has a good range And there are more than a handful of SR shooters as members there.

Memberships are 125$ a year Individuals
150$ Family

Thanks for the replies and interest everyone. I've been a member at Mission for 8 years and for the most part only brought semi-auto rifles to the range. ;)

I'm going to keep this thread going for about a week or two and come up with a tally of how many Mission members are interested (and how you can help, RSO, future RSO, organizing, training, even if it's show up and shoot). I would given like to get an idea how many potential members there are and then going to Iain with numbers and work things out.

Please spread the word.

Dude, if you managed to get Service Rifle going at Mission most LMD shooters would turn out...once the Executive saw how it was run I am sure they would agree to host events and training days...

I'm in too Homer, I'll do what I can to help you. I think you will get a huge number of guys who want to shoot semi's at mission but are fed up with the backwards single shot rule. I would have to think that there has never been a better time to attempt organizing something since the new club president is a good guy.

I've been busy with scheduled training at work and home stuff (a 3 month old and 2 year old) but am planning to talk to Iain soon.

I haven't received much support or interest but planning on trying to get something going in the near future.
