New to the site and I am definitely getting sucked into the shooting sports. I only say AR style to differentiate it from bullpups. I'm new so if the lingo is off, feel free to explain it to me.
Does the perfect AR style 'black' rifle exist? My spec is:
-.223 Calibre
-Uses .223 pistol mags (so u can legally have 10 in the mag)
-Comes in either a restricted and unrestricted barrel. This way you could have both barrels.
-Cost less than $1k(preferably $800)
Well let's forget about the dual barrel idea and focus on non-restricted for off-range use/hunting & camping etc., otherwise why not go straight to the AR itself.
In .223 (which I personally feel is a little weak for hunting deer+) in a 'Non-Bullpup' 'Black Rifle' design you have the just to be released Famae 5xx's, H&K SL8, Swiss Arms, Robinson Arms XCR-L (has #10Rd. mag.'s available), ACR, Benelli MR-1 (probably one or two more brands/models I've missed) however they are all two to three times more then your $800 budget allows (four times in the case of the Swiss).
So for an affordable black gun in .223 and coming in under your $800 budget you don't have many choices yet the Keltec SU-16 or the Ruger Mini14 and two (you could tacticool the Ruger Mini-14 later as your budget allows).
Perhaps switching to a different caliber like one of my personal favourites 7.62x39 and into a SKS for only a couple hundred dollars (then only $200 more to change the stock for something tacticool looking) to start or a CZ58/Czech858 in the same caliber which comes in right around your $800 budget for a new model, both would offer a little more energy for hunting then a .223 rifle would allow and still give you the cool black rifle look in a semi-auto.
Otherwise save your dough and find a deal on a quality new or used semi-auto. NR (Non-Restricted) model of your choosing and buy a rifle you could own a lifetime and use wherever the sport of shooting takes you.
I'm leaning towards the Famae brand of rifles that are just about on the market myself, but in a .308 model for the one rifle that can do it all (well at least for me). Although if the Famae doesn't feel right a Robinson Arms XCR-L in 7.62x39 (for the #10Rd. mag.'s) might just do it.
