Just got my SKS from Lever Arms today.

I got a couple questions...

I have removed the bayonet... do most of you guys remove the bayonet lug (if so, how? and how much trouble is it;))????

How about the cleaning rod, do you guys leave it, or remove it? does it have any other purpose? (back scratcher, conductor stick, ect???)

anyone know where I can get a muzzle break like the one in the Black&white pic here: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43131&highlight=sks+norinco

To remove the bayonet lug you have to cut it off. I'd recommend not doing this, since it means you either have to remove the front sight/bayo lug piece from the barrel (it's pinned in two places and is rumored to be tighter than a nun's ****) or hack it off and re-blue while it's still on the barrel. I simply removed my bayonet and replaced the bolt, no harm done. Plus, NCstar and a couple other companies make bolt-on bipods that use the bayonet lug for mounting purposes, so it's a good idea to keep it on there.

I removed the cleaning rod on mine, as well. The cleaning rod is partly retained by the bayonet when it's closed, and without the bayonet installed it tends to fall out a lot. It doesn't serve any other purpose, and in fact isn't all that great as a cleaning rod either, so I took it out and put it in a deep dark place for someone to find someday :D

As far as the muzzle "break" (it's a brake, as in the kind of brake that "stops" recoil), the one in the black & white pic isn't a brake, it's the grenade launcher that comes standard on Yugoslavian M59/66 SKS's. The end of the barrel on Yugos is threaded, therefore you won't be able to fit a Yugo grenade launcher on your Chicom SKS unless you thread the barrel to match.

Hope that helps!

I leave the bayonet on and the cleaning rod on. As for a muzzle break, why bother? I could see if we were allowed hi cap mags and such but rapid firing 5 rounds from an SKS doesn't warrant needing a break (though, they do look cool).

I've never found a need to remove the bayonet. You never can tell when a pointy thing on the end of the gun might come in handy.

I've been thinkin' about picking up one of those Lever SKS's myself lately. They're just so cheap, I can't resist! Can you tell me what factory markings it has? Is it a pinned or threaded barrel? Do the serial numbers on all the parts match? Much obliged :D

Well, mine came off with a rubber mallet once I took the pin out!

Did I mention I ordered that choate convention stock you pointed me too last week!
factory markings "606", pinned barrel (I was told they were threaded:mad: ) and matching numbers on all parts.

After taking a better look at it, I have come to the conclusion that the bayonet lug stays, I think i'll probably get rid of the cleaning rod though.

Cool :D Glad to hear it, I hope you like it! Let me know if there's any truth to the rumour that they feel flimsy and wobbly, and let us know how it fits :D

Cool cool, sounds like a nice piece, actually  Pinned barrels aren't all that bad, in fact I doubt you'll have any problems with it at all, and the fact that all the numbers match is great :D I'll have to swing by Lever someday soon when I get off work early...

C'mon guys, stop mutilating those SKS's they're ugly enough as is. Best advice to a noob would be to just shoot damn thing.

i like the bayonette on my SKS. too cool! kind of a novelty of sorts. i say keep it on!

I've been hearing about how fun these SKS's are. Where in canada can I order one and how much money do they run for? Also, any good info to read up on to get to know the SKS?

my local store has been waiting for a shippment for months, so I'm told. I'd like to shop around a little, ya know?

thanks, and nice white rifle, I'd be tempted to crawl around in the snow with that gun :)

Watch the EE boards, they pop up quite often.

Yeah and if you do see one, don't spend too long debating if you want it or not if it is reasonably priced. The last two I saw were gone before I could say rumplestiltskin.

1) SIR Mail Order (www.sirmailorder.com)
2) Lever Arms (www.leverarms.com)
3) P&D Enterprises (www.p-d-ent.com)
You'll notice that SKS's typically go for $150 to $170 new, and with aftermarket stocks on them they usually go for $200+ (why, I don't know!).

www.surplusrifle.com and www.simonov.net are the two best sources of info on the entire internet regarding SKS rifles.

Just got my First SKS today, and I bought a Red Dot a few days ago, so I need the scope mount you have on yours. What is it and where can I get one?

Also anyone on Vancouver Island know where I can get one?

Not sure about the mount, Calum, but I just got a second SKS and red dot scope, too! My first SKS didn't come with a bayo and that's fine with me - just added weight. The new one has a bayo and I'll be taking that off, for sure! Funny thing is that the new one (they're both Norcs) has a longer bbl and the bayo mount is set further ahead with a different routing in the forestock. Also, my first one has a nice 1" rubber buttpad but the new one has a metal plate and the length of pull is too damned short. I haven't shot the new one with metal plate. Is that why people are asking about muzzle breaks? I still can't imagine it will kick much.
I have a number of different rifles but my SKS is truly a favourite.
Maybe I'll paint the new one white... ;)
