Norc M14 flash hider problem

I put through about 80 rounds of SA ball 7.62 X 51 when one of the arms of the flash hider detached and bent out. Didnt notice anything strange to that point and was shooting slowly for accuracy, not blasting away. I've put between 500 and 1,000 rounds through it in total. I've had the rifle for approx 1.5 years so warranty from Marstar is expired.

Any suggestions on how this happened? I expect that the flash hider needs to be replaced not fixed. Any suggestions for a gunsmith north of the GTA in Ontario (I go to Epps a few times a year)?

Also, on a side note, I replaced the piston rod with the larger Marstar version and I had problems with shooting doubles and not cycling properly. I put the original piston rod back and it works fine.

Overall I am very happy with the rifle, pretty accurate without any mods, except for the flash hider of course.

Wow, it looks like a bullet got caught in there.

I can't think of anything that would cause that.

On the flip side, you can get a new flash hider to install.

I took the pic while I was cleaning it, just some shooters choice solvent and bore crud that I hadnt yet wiped off. The rifle was clean and dry when I shot it. What is a source for a replacement?

As I have demonstrated in a couple of earlier threads regarding my M14, the Norinco flash suppressors are made by casting the rear portion, turning the front portion from bar stock, and welding the two together. The welds are often very poorly done, and mine was probably not too far from doing what yours did. I replaced it with a USGI one. Repair is not a practical option.

flash hider

The same thing happened to one of my shooting buddies. We replaced the flash-hider with a real M-14 one. Just had to use the Norc nut to attach it. Problem solved...rigrat

The M14s I picked up on the EE had the flash hider cut right off, apparently the guy didn't like the ringing sound it made every shot. (he also ground the front sight down all the way)
I replaced the front sight but I don't mind the missing flash hider, it's a little easier to lug around. Plus, it looks a lot friendlier to the sheeple.:D
