What size is the Norinco AR buffer tube? Mil spec or commercial? Want to order a magpul stock but have no idea what the differences are between mil spec and commercial...don't want to order the wrong one. Did a search and couldn't find anything...THX!

this.

i should've been the one to start this thread last year when i couldn't find out if it was commerical or mil spec by searching online. i bought a mil spec stock, then had to sell it once i found out the hard way that it's a commercial tube .. ugh

I was trying to find a Magpul MOE stock in FDE for mine this past week while in SoCal and it was impossible to find one for a commercial tube. Nobody (5-6 different shops) stocked the one for a commercial tube only mil-spec...they all suggested swapping the tube but it is a Norc so don't want to invest too much into an AR I bought for $529, just trying to make it look cool for my own vanity. Looks like I will need to order online and pay more than I wanted to.

There are two standards because some manufacturers wanted a cheaper, easier to produce, lower receiver extension (RE), commonly, but not necessarily correctly, called a buffer tube, than what was originally specified. Basically, in order to do so, the material had to be thicker, and so that it was able to thread into the same lower receivers, use the same buffer and spring, and allow the same bolt carrier to recoil into the extension, this meant that the threads had to be cut into the outer diameter of the RE of the, generally 6061 extruded, "commercial" RE's, rather than rolled onto the, generally forged 7075, "mil-spec" RE's. This can be seen in the drawings posted a couple of posts up.

Regards.
