It's not difficult to drill and tap it for something else. The bases are probably a Weaver 46 front and a 45 rear. Could be a 55 for the rear like a Husqvarna. Good thing I have base shims on hand. I just got this feeling it's gonna need it.

Yeah I went through all this. Its not hard for some of us, for others drilling and tapping is outside their equipment or skill set. All this info is in my thread.
 
If the screw holes are small enough and I could find bases with the right spacing it wouldn’t cause much trouble. Just a simple drill and tap with inexpensive tools to upgrade to 6-48 or 8-40. If there are no bases that fit or the holes are too small, it would be a real pain though. We’ll need somebody to act it get one, do a complete intelligence review and comparison to a stock commercial 98 and let us know the details.

I think getting an open sight Mauser pattern rifle brand new for $500 wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen to a hunter.
