Norinco NP-29 Review, Range Report

With these softies did it fail to lock back at the last shot? Were the empties that did make it out just dribbling over the back of your hand instead of leaping for freedom? If so it sounds like the recoil spring is too stiff FOR THOSE RELOADS. The low recoil impulse isn't strong enough for long enough to make the slide function properly. A softer recoil spring SHOULD tune the NP29 to suit that ammo. But just don't shoot the snappier stuff without changing the springs back or the slide will hammer the rear stop with too much energy.

Just an update. I reloaded some 147 gr aim projectiles with 2.7gr of tite group (max load, Lyman 49th edition manual). The gun would not cycle these at all. FTE, stovepipes on every round!

They fired perfect through the np-22 and amazing through the np-34 (virtually no recoil!), but the no-29 despised this load. Disappointing since I loaded 600 of them!

It was running flawless with the 124 gr reloads with tite group I made when initially testing.

Hodgdon site show 3.2gr to 3.6gr for 147 gr HDY XTP bullets. seems to be a little under charge. Some gun can take lower charge but some may not.

good info.

i popped off around 30 rounds of 124gr/titegroup and a few times my slide did not lock back after the last round. i believe i could have powdered a bit light --- i just re-weighed again (4.4 grains) and will test again.

EDIT: Figured out the discrepancy. The aim projectiles are plated so I used lead data from lyman. the hornady xtp are jacketed.

Can I safely work up a load from lead to jacketed data? or is this a general no no?

that is interesting. I wonder why the variation from book to book. That does seem like a big jump from 2.7 to 3.6 grains. Will have to investigate further. I hope my reloads meet min PF for ipsc after all, like lyman suggest they will..... hmmmm

I did the lazy way of tuning the np29. Detail strip, slather with autosol or any polish paste. Reassemble. Shoot two boxes of ammo, reapplying paste where areas are need it. Then detail strip. Hose with really hot water, compressed air dry, and spray lube.

A great review....

As I've said in the past about Norc M14's... Don't buy ONE! Buy TWO of them! :D

I've loved my NP29's (had two of them) over the years. :)

Cheers,
Barney

I shot 150rds with mine in December without any failures.

Range is 2hr away, and with school, I haven't gotten back out.

what parts appear to be spec 1911 parts, or easily replaceable with aftermarket parts?

I believe all 1911 parts are to spec and all aftermarket parts will fit. They will most likely require some fitting/sanding/tuning, but thats normal for any 1911
