Norinco NP-29 Review, Range Report

Really is a decent looking finish on that thing. Thanks for the pics. I've had my eye on the NP-29 as well. The other Norinco 1911 that SFRC has that has a really nice looking finish on it is the "Norinco 1911A1C". I really like the 4.25" barrel a lot more as far as looks are concerned. I just wish I could get one in 9mm. Really a shame that 9mm 1911's are so bloody rare.

My Norc mags won't accept more than 4 rounds. Something binds. Anyone else have this problem? Any solution?

This problem is in 4 of 4 mags.

Hmm my 2 mags accept all 9 rounds. Maybe there is extra cosmoline in your mags causing the bind or the followers have some rough edges?

I think with enough force (assuming my theories are right) and the mags should take more rounds....

IF it is cosmoline, you could heat them up and let it melt away

just received my np29 in mail today. not bad but the fitting is gritty as hell and the grip safety is sharp enough to seriously cut you. off to the gunsmith with it...

Mag problem solved.

Push the follower down part way with a pencil and then push a small screw driver or piece of wire through the holes, from side to side.

Then the follower can be pulled out.

The front right part of the follower is binding lightly in the mag and then snags on the square notch. If about 1 mm of material is removed from the front and right of the follower, it won't bind or snag.

If you don't want to take follower out, a small file can be used to remove the material.

The mag now loads just fine.

It just needs a super top- to- bottom detail strip and cleaning.

I have detailed stripped mine a total of 3 times now, with dremel buffer and polisher in hand, with out firing a single shot yet. The slide is quick smooth now, thumb safety engages quite nicely, trigger is a lot less gritty.

Just natural 'induced' break-in - that's all it needs.

I got my NP29 from Canada Ammo today. Ordered late on Friday night and it delivered at 1pm today. Monday charged the card, tuesday the transfer was in progress, shipped wednesday, and arrived today.

Came with 2 mags and looked like everyone elses in a bag and covered with oil. I spent the evening breaking it down and cleaning up the oil. Overall I'm very happy with the quality vs. money paid.

Most of the controls started out very gritty but after a good wipedown it was much better.

The sights stand out well but are pretty roughly finished and quite sharp on the edges.

The trigger is shootable as is, but not excellent.

The finish on the gun is much better than I had thought it would be. I really like the machining done to the top of the slide.

The grips are rubber and work well but are nothing special.

The back point of the grip safety and the slide cuts aren't going to slice you open as is without trying, but they could have the edge taken off.

I intend to shoot this gun as is and slowly upgrade it over time. The grips and sights will probably be the first things to change followed by the ambi-safety and extended slide stop. The trigger I'll let break in for a bit and then see what I can do to smooth it out before I look to replace it.

Here's some pictures of mine post initial cleanup.

@wkoop: Is your front sight off centre or is it just the picture?

If I look close the sight isn't quite straight up and down but it is centered. The photo makes it look off center and very bent but that isn't the case.

I did a detail strip and cleaning of mine as well. Did anyone find the mainspring housing very hard to remove? Any tips?

Since it is a cheap plastic part, I sanded the crap out of it until I could get it back in smoothly. Before that I was cutting my hands forcing it out (see review pics above)

I got one yesterday and cleaned and took to the range today. Was very accurate, felt great in the hand and had less recoil than my other 9mms.

But maybe cleaned too well and didn't lube up enough. Over about 100 shots I had 3 or 4 FTFs and a stovepipe after the final shot in each and every mag (using 4 different mags).

Took it apart after the first 20 or so and relubed. But same issues with the stovepipes. Definitely some rough edges here and there.

WTF? Any advice?

Follow up - restripped, relubed, re-assembled and took back to the range.

Was a little better with the bulk Remington 9mm 115gr ammo - no FTFs and only one stovepipe but the slide wasn't reliably locking back after the last shot in the mag.

Then tried with American Eagle 147gr and it worked like a top - no FTFs, no stovepipes, locked up fine. Then went back to the Remington and it worked much better too.

Apparently just needed encouragement (and a little force) to deburr.

Finally took mine out to the range this past weekend.

All in all, I am quite pleased.

After a handful of cleanings and relubes, I popped off about 100 rounds of Winchester value pack in 115gr. No FTF or FTE's -- she prints quite nicely.

I replaced the cheap plastic grips with Hoque wrap-arounds and it was a world of difference for me.

Definitely a great range popper.

Just an update. I reloaded some 147 gr aim projectiles with 2.7gr of tite group (max load, Lyman 49th edition manual). The gun would not cycle these at all. FTE, stovepipes on every round!

They fired perfect through the np-22 and amazing through the np-34 (virtually no recoil!), but the no-29 despised this load. Disappointing since I loaded 600 of them!

It was running flawless with the 124 gr reloads with tite group I made when initially testing.
