Norinco type 97 rifle is in Vancouver

For those who has never seen or shot this T97, leme tell ya something. :D No it's not worth a grand. If it was non restricted with extendable stock, it could be sold for 500-700. But now it's restricted, so it's only good for range shooting, let's take $100 off. The finish looks pretty cheap, so let's take another $100 off. For those SWAT wannabes, the lack of tactical features on this gun should give you another $100 off. Besides all these minuses, I hate this gun's looking, so for me I'd pay another $100 less. Now lets do the math, how much should the price tag be...$100! ...at most. :D

And I did the math, taking $400 off a $1450 price tag doesn't leave you with $100...

I want what you're smoking! ;)

Do not be surprised by the cost. Lever arms is the home of the 700 dollar M14 and other assorted overpriced goodies. If another dealer picks up the 97 I am sure it will go for quite a bit cheaper...

Going by that same ratio:

Code:
          Lever Marstar
M14 700. 400.
M97 1450. 829.
Even at $829, I really don't think I would buy one just because it is a bullpup. I would rather spend the money on an AR15 that I can get all kinds of stuff for and take it south of the border for matches where the Norinco can't go.

I don't know why is everyone #####ing about the 97:confused::confused:
Forcasting market prices, complaining about chinese manufacturing and prices.
Comparing with the Tavor in terms of quality and price. I mean come on. You don't like it..don't buy it and stop whining.
That's part of life. If you're talking about guns, cars, boats, or hamburgers. Get over it. :runaway:

I'm glad they are in the country but I don't think it is for me.

Well if the original non-restricted length finally comes in then that is a different story, also I thought only the importation of norincos for sale is the issue, not the transport of ones off to competition.

BTW what is a topic about a black rifle that uses an intermediary varmint cartridge doing in the main battle rifles section anyway?

Can't compare M305 pricing. 305s are being set up with most parts predating the US ban on importing these rifles. Using up the leftovers, so to speak.
If there are two importers, I would expect a bit of price competition, unless there is a gentleman's agreement not to undercut prices. If the market is there, there is not much incentive to reduce prices. Why sell something for $1000, if you can sell all you can import for $1500?
No point in comparing the 97 with a Tavor. Both compact 5.56s, but that's where it ends.
For vision reasons, I couldn't use a 97; need an optical sight. Doesn't look as if there is much provision for mounting one, unless it goes on top of the handle - which would make it very high.
Non-restricted status is an issue. I would expect that a non-restricted version would be much more salable than a restricted.

Does it take AR mags?

Yup, youtube search Type 97, you'll see it fire standard 30/5 mags and the 10 round LAR15 pistol magazines. Seems to work no problem at all with them.

I'm definitely interested in getting a non restricted T97. Total ### bomb!

My understanding is no Norks brought into the USA at all, whatever their purpose. Can anyone confirm?

Norinco sells shotguns in the states, saw a cool one with a box mag last time I was at the Syracuse show. Cant remember what they were asking for it tho.

Posting for a Buddy who's Francophone and a not member here....

He wants one. He, like me, is a caster. He loves my little Lyman 225646 bullet.

We believe these things are piston driven (like the M14 and SKS and NOT like AR's system), so theoretically he can shoot cast boolits thru it, right?

type 97

so I have been told CAN_AM will be getting those rifles soon and they will be nonrestricted. and for $849 or so . that price is much too hi. a shooter at my club had one from CAN- AM and it is the restricted model and some of my friends that are ex-military had a look at it and said it looked well made . :ar15::ar15:

copied from youtube: "sgtrummy (1 month ago) Nice gun but you are reloading it wrong. I am serving with the british army in Iraq, and as you probably know we use the SA80 which is a bullpup design. We are told to extend the gun out so you can see the mag well then slip in the mag. Its quicker and more comfortable that way. That being said the gun you have there is very nice. "

Canam - though I don't have the money or inclination towards the T97 right now, on behalf of the canadian firearms market - thanks for bringing this puppy in at half what most other importers are!!!
