Norinco upgrade path on a budget

Why don't people manufacture unitized gas cylinders?...

It's unfortunate that these awesome guns need so many tweaks :(

Unitizng does not fall under the "needs" category
It falls under the "wants" category
The "needs" category for an out of the box, standard M1A or M305 would be
Ensure muzzle device is correctly machined and fitted
Ensure front and rear sights are positively functional
Ensure correct stock fit
Ensure thorough cleaning and inspect general parts fitment
Ensure correct greasing procedures
Ensure inside bolt and gas system are clean and dry (no oil no grease)
Ensure rifle passes all safety checks

And hit the targets with a schwak of ammo.
Get to know your rifle and then decide on upgrades/smith work
Also due to some builds being a money pit, my approach is this
First, upgrade for functional reliabilty
Then upgrade for ergonomics that suit me
Next comes upgrading for accuracy if required
And last upgrading for cosmetics so your friends say holy crap look at that when you show up to your range with your rifle :D

Any reason why, or does he just hate Canada?
From their page:

We do not ship outside the US. We do not ship stocks to Canada, because Canadian customs has been arbitrarily turning stocks back at the border(!)
I believe that US customs doesn't allow for parts labelled as M14 to be exported, because of ITAR, hence the invention of "M1A". There's also the fact that he'd need an export license.
So... he's been too lazy to figure it all out, since there's (seemingly) not enough to make it worth his while. :)
Just my guess, anyhow.

From my understanding, he used to ship here many years ago but as I understand it, he got slapped hard for it and has never gone down that road since
But then again, we would have to ask Fred himself for the real reason

I've told all of ya before, Thomas will forget more than I will ever know what to do with an M14!! He's a mechanical genius while I am the tweaker.... and wannabee comedian at my M14 Clinics... :D

Cheers

My head's gonna explode with all this ego strokin Barney hehehe careful now :D
Seriously though, the past couple years was so stressful and frantic that I decided I need to take a long break from M14 smithing and clinics and such. I may become "semi retired" at some point down the line but for now and the forseeable future, I'm just taking it real easy :D

How much would all these tweaks cost at the end of the day? I really have my heart set on getting an M14, and it'll probably be a Norinco since I'm not able or willing to shell out 2500+ dollars on a rifle. I'm probably asking a bit too soon since it will be a while before I get my permit.

I have about $1600 into mine, but that includes a $600 black feather (not a necessity).

Doesn't need to be a money pit at all.

50 bucks for a new FH..( not an issue if your going to scope it)
40 bucks for a new ORS guide
18 bucks for homemade stock. ( Got the ergos I wanted and eliminated stock flex)
0 bucks for Hockey Night trigger job ( I went with FMJ,twice, seemed more appropriate, tho I do hear Black Hawk Down gives good results too )
50 bucks for Barneys clinic ( best money Ive spent since that weekend in Amsterdam ;) )

With outta the box ammo Im getting around 2 to 3 inches at 100 yds (including the one in five flyer Grrrrrrrrr)
Handloads are the BIGGEST improvement to accuracy
Me ..I would buy a gun. Strip it clean it grease it test it and shoot it before I spent a penny or a minute on a shopping list.
There are some remarkable shooters straight from the box.
Sometimes it aint what ya got....its how ya use it.

Buy one and have some fun while they are still cheap...I mean attractively priced :)

Yer right, it does not have to be a money pit once ya figure out the tweaks. Remember that I ain't no gunsmith just a teacher who empowers YOU to do the tweaking yerself and realize these rifles are fun despite the alarmists, naysayers, slam fire tempters, and other "yer #### will fall off!" Types. :)

One does not have to put tons of money into a bear/zombie/deer/moose/elk/ truck gun that is unbeatable iron sight shooter with quality booooolits. :D

Have lots of fun and help the noobies!

Does it say anything about shipping to post offices?

I wanted the classic 'issued' look... So I did this to my rifle;
-Hungry clinic with the new rifle which resulted in,
- USGI fibreglass stock
- match oprod guiderod
- Garand rear sights
- 8 thou shim in the gas system
- Dlask oprod
- Sparrowhawk dummy selector
- read the stickies in this forum, grease her up & buy LOTS & LOTS OF AMMO!!!

And I am sure that I have forgotten something... But she looks like this now...

Cheers
