Northern Bush Rifle suggestions

The extractor is NOT cast... the receiver and TG are cast, which is an entirely moot point as they simply don't fail at any rate higher than a classic forging. The CRF Ruger M77's use a "modified" Mauser style extractor... which is not the same as the original 98 extractor.

What?? The receiver now, too? And TG (refresh me on what TG stands for?)? I don't suppose the receiver is a deal breaker, probably doesn't lock up there, but I still like "real" forged steel.
I'm aware of it being modified, as the extractor will snap over a rim, whereas a 98 won't.

I didn't think the extractor was cast, but then I searched it, and found a couple references to it being metal injection moulded. Not sure if that is considered cast in the traditional sense, but I think of it that way.

After I searched it, it was recommended not to make a habit of push feeding rounds, as that tended to make the extractor flex enough to snap an extractor on occasion. Makes sense if it is cast, as cast as far as what I know about it does not flex well.

The place needs more time afield and use of guns rather than talk of guns. Really, the OP’s lowest concern is what gun to carry though for most of us that’s the fun part to daydream about. Reality is his outerwear, tent, boots, camp kit and navigation are 99% of the planning required. You can do without the gun but not without the boots and jacket.

I am eyeing a pretty browning high power in 30-06 that looks to be in very good condition. Has the mauser style feed system, and is in a good caliber.

That'll do. Really get the gun you want, the cartridge (within reason) is secondary. Really your needs are defined by what is a moose rifle.

Watch out for these short barreled rifles, I chrono'ed some 7.62x51 147 grainers, 2510 fps, this isn't much more than an SKS with 123 grainers at 2440ish. Same with the 7x57, Federal 175 grain, 1965 fps (they claim 2390), even the Euro stuff, 2220 fps. Not much carries better than a Win 94 and my 30WCF did 2140 fps with Remington 170 grainers. And yeah, whats the SD of an expanded 7mm vs 30 cal bullet.

Im planning a 10 day hiking trip in northern BC for beginning of june ( telegraph creek area) and im just starting to realize this post is 100% true.

Very wise words here folks.

There are hundreds of outdoors and hiking forums, blogs and websites with gear reviews and personal experiences recorded for that stuff. CGN and a few other forums are where one asks about guns.

There are quite a few factory 30-30 loads that don't break 2000 fps. 303 British factory loads are often very sluggish too.

early June in the lower stikine = bugs, lots of punky snow anywhere with shadows or north facing, high water and difficult/dangerous creek crossings, no fish, no berries, always a rainy month. Go in August.

Well tickets are already bought. I wanted to this fall before it got to cold but life got in the way..

Also i read june is the 3rd dryest month and also has an avrage temp of only 16 and near 0 nights.

I assumed that was too cold for bugs and seemed dry according to telegraph creeks avrage rain fall reports

I have a thread on this trip in the hunting section. Post there is you wish to add more. So i dont derail this thread

Definitely not too cold for bugs! They’ll carry you away that time of year.

Haha well i now believe it, after you guys told me i was talking to my dad tonight who worked in the yukon for a few summers and he said when you get out if the truck and hear a 2 stroke coming and you dont see one, get back in the truck.

Blaser R8 Professional in 30-06 with a Leica 3-12x50 is my go to these days, this is the more basic model with non-removable trigger group. My favorite part of the rifle setup aside from the Blaser action is the sling from Slogan outdoors in the states heavy duty rubber sling that doesn't slip and slide around on your clothing like leather ones.
