Northern Rim...yet another cheap shortie .22

Lol, "from your stash" makes it sound as though I was standing in front of a neatly arranged shelf holding numerous carefully stacked bricks of assorted ammo. And I do have something like that, but...I delve into it when I'm taking out one of my favourite guns and know which ammo it likes and which it doesn't.

Most of what I've shot through the NRim has been the other stuff; the ziploc baggies and half-boxes and handfuls of leftovers found in pockets and glove compartments and center consoles. Much of it was completely unidentifiable. :)

But today...I shot just over 100 rounds @ 50 yards of my dwindling supply of Winchester T22 and my entire remaining stock (60-ish) of Russian Junior .22lr. Thse are both standard velocity rounds. The Winchester produced very consistent 10-shot groups of roughly 1.25 inches. The worst group was 1.5 inches and it was the very first group shot with that ammo; further evidence of the need to season a rimfire bore with a specific rimfire load to get the best out of it. Yes, I am cheating and not counting two very obvious fliers of which I was aware as I shot; they were very clearly operator error and not ammo-related.

The Junior ammo was the last remaining vestige of a case of this stuff that I bought something like 30 years ago. This ammo was unbelievably cheap, and in hindsight I wish I had purchased all they had. It shoots quite well in virtually every gun I've ever tried, and extremely well in some of them. It's only real problem is that it is by far the dirtiest ammo I've ever used. Burns fairly dirty, stinks, and the stuff is coated with a dark waxy coating that is sticky and unpleasant to handle even when simply loading mags. When I first opened the case back in the previous millennium the boxes and the ammo inside of them looked like they had come from an archaeological dig and smelled like an unwashed SKS. After a shooting session, cleaning the rifle is reminiscent of a blackpowder clean-up.

But...5 out of 6 groups fired this morning with Junior (once again the first one was the worst) were within an inch in diameter, and two were 7/8-inch. And now I have none of this ammo left. :( Again, I'm not including an insanely bad flier that I felt immediately. Sue me.

As the trigger continues to improve on the NRim I expect the fliers to become less common. :)

That's not the only good news! This little gun still makes me smile when I pick it up; that's its main purpose, and it fills the role admirably...which is good news. There have been many guns I've purchased online, sight unseen, based upon nothing more than pictures and online reviews. Most of them were much more expensive than this one, supposedly better quality...and some of them I regretted purchasing within an hour of shooting them.

I have about 15 Ruger mags that all fit and feed perfectly in the NRim, and its two mags work perfectly in my single remaining 10/22. I quite like the semi-transparent construction. :)

Do it! Do it! Do it!

....but get the wood-stocked one. :)
I do like wood, but I'm kind of picky with the grain in a boring and straight kind of way.... not in to tiger stripes and really not into loose wavy grain with knots etc.
The synthetic version looks pretty well executed on this gun.... mostly what attracts me is the fact they use Ruger Mags which like you I have a bunch of.

North Sylva is calling the barrels "select", sounds like it's really being quite selective in terms of what it likes and hates!
The only good news is it doesn't hate everything.

How do you find the feeding from Ruger mags in general, I'm still tempted to pick up a plastic stocked version and might jump if Tenda has a sale when they open their new Alberta store.

Do you have any CCI quiets to try out for quiet mission inside of 25 yards?
Feeds great out of the 10/22 mags, I have had zero issues. I have an acreage but my closest neighbor is less than a km from me, they cannot hear any subs let alone the quiets haha. Tenda is opening a store in Alberta!?!?

Right on good neighbors are nice to have and so is a buffer zone...... :)
There is a thread that Tenda started a few weeks back looking for employees for a new Calgary location that is opening in the next month or two.

Oh man that would be great. I haven't been able to order anything from Tenda since I moved to my farm. They can only ship to the address on my PAL and that is a PO box. They wont ship to PO boxes even though it is in a post office.. I would make the drive to Calgary just to stock up ammo.

Something's not right there. I have ordered several firearms from Tenda, the most recent being the subject of this thread only a couple weeks ago, and they had no issues delivering to my PO Box. I believe if you read their site carefully there is mention made that only Canada Post can be chosen as the shipping service for firearms if you have a PO Box, meaning that you can't select any of the other courier options.

That more or less bit me on the a$$ with my recent purchase. I was ordering the Northern Rim shortie and of course wanted to take advantage of their "free shipping". Like many other vendors, there is fine print explaining that for oversize packages the buyer will be required to pay the surcharge. Much to my chagrin, I was informed of a $22 additional charge that I needed to pay before they could ship. I questioned this, thinking that such a short firearm would ship in a very compact box. Nope! Northern Rim uses the same size of box for several models, a box long enough to accommodate the "standard" length guns...which means it ends up being about an inch too long to qualify for the completely free shipping. :(

Not Tenda's fault at all, in fact when I questioned the charge they went to the extent of sending me a couple pics of the box showing the measurements. I paid the fee.

Where I am at in southern Alberta, they absolutely will not ship firearms or ammo to me even with Canada Post unfortunately. I have tried more than once. Is you PO box the address for your PAL?

Yes, same address, in Manitoba. Not sure what the difference is, no problem shipping here. I suspect that the address you have on file with the horse cops is the legal description of your physical address, rather than your mailing address, i.e. your PO box. In other words, they have the address as shown on the tax roles...which is essentially meaningless to most people for most purposes and cannot be used for package delivery.

Does Tenda as a vendor confirm the address with the RCMP before shipping a gun? No address is shown on the actual PAL/RPAL card, so I'm not sure exactly how the dealer knows that the address does not match.

Perhaps you can check your account with the RCMP and confirm this, and change the address shown there to your PO Box if that's not what is on there now?

All retailers confirm the shipping address to the PAL, they can see it when they validate it with the RCMP. I assume it is store policy for most retailers as it is legal ship non-restricted firearms to an alternate address.

My PAL actually has both addresses, land location and PO box. I checked Tendas site and this is what they have under restrictions.
  • Firearm Related products including ammunition and firearms could NOT be shipped to PO BOX address, UPS store or Access Points, must be a physical address matches PAL
They also have this under Address & License
  • If not being shipped to the CFO mailing or storage address (such as a business location), we will need to verify the address the RCMP has on file before proceeding
I am not sure how they have shipped to your PO box unless you have a physical address on file that in turn goes to a community box. The order should not pass go if its says PO box in the address. I have had a few retailers that will ship to my PO box, just not Tenda unfortunately.

It reads like their policy should allow it to be sent to the PO on file with the CFC?

Tenda seems to have issues understanding the reason behind certain policies such as in your case the difference between someone renting a post box that is not connected to a physical address, and another person who's physical address is tied to a post office box number..... even when it is on file with the CFC!

They seem to take some control measures to unreasonable lengths and prefer to err on the side of caution like someone who trigger locks their pistol inside of a safe.

They want a geographic address so they can find you when they come to take your guns. Good luck finding them in a PO box.

Honest question. Is it more or as accurate to a stock 10/22?

I got zero bolt action that have uses magazines. I do have 4, 10/22 magazines.

Or should I get a Ruger American?

Based on what I saw this weekend, I would say, yes, as accurate as a 10/22. I had the opportunity to help a new shooter sight one that he recently bought with the wooden stock. It was a nice, but plain piece of walnut, likely Turkish. Good solid rifle, substantial steel construction. It was only shot with irons, but the more it was shot the tighter the groups became. It is clearly related to the Scorpio; the iron sights are identical. The rear sight is easily adjustable. Using the 1 factory mag that it came with, and well over 100 rounds, not a single misfire or failure to feed or fire using cheap federal bulk ammo.

IMO, it is a better gun than it should be for the money.
