Norwegian K98 ****PICS ADDED****

Amazon has them too. I got one with my Yugo capture 98 from trade true ex. Took a fair bit of beeswax and oil to soften it up for use after likely no care since issue if ever.
Be aware if you take aware leather sling out hunting it will stretch until it reaches some new length.

Try using FluidFilm on old, dried out leather. It's made from pure lanolin, and conditions leather better than any off the shelf product I've used. It is all natural, does not contain any silicones or drying agents and does not evaporate. In my former career as a museum conservator, I would use fluid film on many leather artifacts that were used in interpretive displays and subjected to frequent handling.

Get it at Canadian Tire. http://www.fluid-film.com/

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guys, I've bought and sold probably north of 300 firearms, and I have never received a finer milsurp in my entire life. To say this Norwegian is "VG" would be like calling Maria Sharapova "plain". The rifle is f**king perfect. All matching K98, with exception of the bolt which is off by 2 digits, matches itself, and was restamped to match the new serial number added by the Norwegians. In other words, it is 100% correct. Very happy camper. Will post pics later. Go to this guy's ad and buy his sh*t... he's the real deal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw, it came in a brand new hard case, inside a brand new gun sock. Perfectly clean, oiled and ready to store. I need to do nothing but handle and brag.

Cheerio for now.

Congrats on your new K98, very nice!
I have one of it's relatives....
OK

The reality is, well it's not All-Matching and to say it is would be misleading. Reworked and Refurbished hits the nail on the head. The Norwegian K98's are nice rifles, refurbished and altered post-war. The calibre originally was 8mm Mauser, now .30-06, not quite German. The machining on receiver to remove steel to accommodate the longer cartridge and the postwar stamped letters and words on the left side. Altered somewhat like an Israeli K98 and RC, but no longer Original as it was from the Steyr factory in Austria. Should be a great shooter and they do look good compared to an RC.

Beeswax and oil are the standard preps I have used it on numerous pieces of horse tack etc from halters, bridles, saddles etc... best done when warm but clean off the old dry leather with some tack soap the when dry apply some oil and rub in some beeswax evenly then leave in a warm place. Repeat till its awesome. Done that for years treated my leather full hide sling the same since it's the same.

Thank though I just have a full garage of horse gear thanks to Dalton Mcthievery robbing the horse racing industry of its Ontario racing program which kept me afloat.....

I have a cousin to that rifle. Deadly accurate with some US surplus ammo I tried in it. Yours is very nice. I wouldn't worry about the "matching" business. It was rebarreled and refurbished and given the OK by some crusty Norwegian armorer. Thanks for posting the pics and the text! :)

Agreed, but I would add that with the sight modifications, modern well finished barrel, the fact that only the best examples were kept by the Norwegians, and none of the former Nazi markings were removed, makes them preferred. They have an interesting history as Nazi occupier arms, then served in the Norwegian forces and Home Guard until 1973. It doesn't hurt that they're mostly matching and in the case of the bolt, headspace checked--not just flopped together. A collectible and practical shooter is a nice combination. I'd buy another in a heartbeat, but with one of the other Norwegian military unit codes.

From what I understand only units from 1943 and older were kept, the rest was scrapped. Bad steel in the 44 and 45 models.

That is an often repeated but untrue tale. The rifles produced in '44 and '45 were made from fine steel. Only the finish work was eliminated. Late war k98's were much cruder to look at but the materials were fine. With the exception of the last ditch rifles that are really unsafe to fire by modern standards.

Congratulations! I've been after one of these Norwegian conversions, off and on, for a year and have yet to land one. They don't pop up often in the States and I'm cheap, which compounds the problem.

Do you guys know if the cleaning rod is a slightly different diameter for the Norwegian conversions? My newly acquired K98 bayonet ('41) does not slide over the cleaning rod without feeling like I'm going to peel off the bluing on it. When I remove the cleaning rod, the bayonet slides onto the lug perfectly.

Found a reference on a norwegian site that had two bayonets for sale. It stated on one of them that it would fit the HV-Mauser (NOR K98)

Sounds like a different diameter hole. Will dig a little deeper later and update ...

The norwegian rifles can be found with both original or norwegian made rods. Both should fit. Possibly a slightly oversized rod? Or a burr somewhere? Great looking rifle by the way. Been to the range yet?

Found little on Norwegian sites. Googled the issue and there are lots of suggestions. Slightly bent handle, reproduction rod etc...

Have a close look at bayonet channel and cleaning rod to inspect. There is another thread here about grand slam bayonet collection, a specialty collector like that may be able to get some info if the inspection do not yield any results to solve the puzzle.

I had a close inspection. I appears the end of the cleaning rod isn't perfectly aligned to the rod. Hard to explain. I would assume it's a post war reproduction of some sort. I ordered an original K98 cleaning rod off eBay (ouch). I am gambling it will fit my bayonets.

Can you twist the rod and align that way?
