This one came with an interesting story. In my Uncle's words:

"Uncle Dell (making him my Great Uncle) Grandpa's Brother, came across this mule deer standing in the creek while hunting in Lake Fork (Spanish Fork Canyon) in 1949. He jumped off his horse and got ready to shoot it, then noticed something strange about it. So, he watched it for a while and determined it was blind. He and two of his sons roped it and took it down to their camp and tied it between two trees so it couldn't hurt itself.

After the hunt, they took it to the Springville fish hatchery where the Fish & Game had some corrals and pens for injured animals. The Vet told them that the deer had bad cataracts, and could only see about two feet at best. As a kid, I remember going there with Grandpa from time to time to check up on him. He lived for many more years in peace and comfort!"

My father posing next to a wolf his father killed in a trap. It had gotten caught by one toe in a trap set by my Grandfather. It was lunging at him in the trap as he approached with nothing more than about a 4 foot length of "green" poplar 3" or so in diameter. He said he didn't have a rifle with him and the stick was all he could find nearby. Gramp said he kept hoping the wolf's toe wouldn't rip loose as it hit the end of the chain on the trap each time it lunged at him. He crept closer and closer to where he felt he could hit it over the head at the end of its reach lunging at him. He hit it over the head so hard he said he broke the poplar stick clean in half. My Grandfather in the early 60's around 1960-63 with a couple bulls he punched with his Model 71 .348 he purchased the last year they were produced. They shot the moose near the Frederickhouse Dam near Connaught, Ontario where my Grandfather served as the dam tender for Ontario Hydro from 1947 to 1954. I know for certain the second photo was the 1961 season, the other I am not sure? It may have been the same year as he often seemed to be the one to fill the tags for the group he hunted with in those days. On his right is a friend and co-worker he hunted and fished with for close to 30 years. I shot my first deer with that rifle...

Hey Cat some of those pics appeared in a late '50's Rod and Gun in Canada. I had the magazine for years so I remember the pics well. Wish I had of kept it to give to you.

Wow, that is so cool!
That would have been great! Rod and Gun in Canada makes perfect sense, although I know he freelanced for several other magazines as well.
