I have searched the threads, lots of oppinions and bashing and promoting as usual.

I would like to hear honestly from those who own or have owned, and used the calibre they reccomend.

Coyote Rifle with only factory ammunition, 300 yrd shots or less, Usually less.

what are the suggestions other than 22 250.

It's not rocket science. Anything from the 17 Rem and up are regularly used on yotes. The smaller, the less pelt damage. Any differences between them are splitting hairs really, for this application
 
223 can be purchased just about anywhere. 204 Ruger will work well for what work you are asking of a varmint cartridge as well. So will any number of wildcats.
 
so basically. for the general purpose of the firearm, 222, 223, 204,
etc, are pretty equal until you get down to the 'real skilled' level where differences are noticed.

one more question.

the option between 25 06 or 223 wssm?

recoil,versatility, availability of premium factory ammo?

I've killed hundreds of coyotes with the 223. Out to about 300 yards plus or minus. Graveyard dead/ no fur damage. inexpensive ammo.

I also have used most of the other "coyote" calibers. I shoot a 220 swift out to 400= or-yds. very dead. little por no fur damage. Sometimes I kill farther out with this gun.

204 is ok to 300 with right bullet, otherwise splash entry and runners.

243 is deadly, but can be hard on fur.
17 rem is ok to 150 yds. otherwise it is a gopher gun......shoot a coyote with it and gopher a bigger gun:dancingbanana:

I've also seen the 17's and 22's and 22 mags and they are not consistently enough gun.

The 25.06 is deadly within it's limitations, but I'm not sure if you mean as a coyote gun. If that is what you want it for, you aren't interested in fur.
I would stay away from the wssm. They didn't seem to live up to expectations. If you want something hotter than 223 than go 223AI.
 
I've only ever used 22-250's on coyotes. It worked like a charm on those yoddle dogs.

I never had to make a shot over 75 yards but I would have felt very comfortable making 200 yard shots.


If I didn't use the 22-250 I would opt for a 220 swift or 204 ruger.
 
I use a .243 Win. with 55 grain bullets. It is a little more versatile as you could use it for deer or larger game with a different bullet.

If fox are in the hunt plan the .222 or the .22 hornet are really good choices. Fox are thin skinned and dont take much to put down. I have shot red fox at 25yds with the .222 and only had minor sewing to do after. Shoot a fox with a 22-250, 220sw, 223, or any of the other fast .22's and you might as well not even bother walking out to pick them up un less its a frontal shot with a sxsp. Even then it would be iffy.

The .222 is also my favorite jack rabbit gun. Shoots flat enough and accurately enough to hit the little buggers out to 250yds or so.

Keep the coyotes inside 250yds and the .222 will also kill them just fine.


If coyotes are your only target the .22-250 and .223 are king.

I've shot a fox with a .223 with a 45grn WWB at about 80 yards. Put a hole about the size of a twoonie on the left side, the other side was unhurt.

Hmm, criteria being factory ammo only and the .22-250 being excluded, the best choice would undoubtedly be .223.

I have no doubt there are others with stories like yours also but more often than not you will tear a fox to bits with the .22's that approach or exceed 4000fps.

Heavy robust bullets to slow the .223 down a bit may well get better results on fox but I havent tried it.

I have been using a 222 for over 20 years now, and while not as popular as it once was, it's a fine varmint round. It's one of the most constantly accurate rounds (it used to be the king of bench rest shooting years ago), plus the report isn't any where near as loud as say a 22-250.

There is also hardly any recoil, so you can spot your shots and make adjustments for elevation / windage if necessary. As far as fox / coyotes go, it works as good as anything out to about 250 yards or so, and won't usually cause the kind of pelt damage that more powerful cartridges can cause.
