So I was putting a rifle into the safe last night and it felt funny when I was turning the handle to lock the safe - it was almost like something was in the way. So I opened the door, made sure everything was ok and tried again. It still felt funny. I checked again - everything seems ok. I turned the handle with a bit more force and it closed.

So now the fun part. I just tried to open the safe...and it doesn't open. I insert the key and it almost feels like the lock twists the key under it's own weight - not quite but when I start to turn the key it hits a point where it feels that way. I have been trying for some time and nothing.

So do I just buy another safe and start filling the new safe with new firearms? I could leave this one like a time capsule and when I eventually sort it out I will be so happy to see my long lost kit. In the meantime I would have acquired new kit because, you know, a man's got move on when such disaster strikes.

Or maybe there are some other options out there.... *ahem* - that is the cue for some brilliant CGN advice.

Don't know much about the anatomy of how your safe works. Key? Combo lock and key? How about a locksmith to break it open? I like the time capsule idea though.... Good excuse to get new toys and nothing like reacquiting with an old love years later.

You tried giving the safe door a good swift kick while trying to open it?

I've got a sentry safe that sticks some times, give it a boot and it opens on up after I punch in the code.

If you have a handle below the keyhole, try firmly grasping that handle and apply a little amount of force in the opposite direction you would normally turn the handle to open the door and then try unlocking. That used to do the trick for me on one of my crappy old ones before I upgraded

Believe me that hitting it with a sledgehammer has crossed my mind. But it really feels funny when I try to turn the key. Something must be haywire in there. Maybe one (or more) or the rubber bands broke.

Mail it to me... I'll open it and send it back...

Yup I have had the misfortune of what youRe experiencing. The key mechanism failed and the punch code didn't work either. I ended up very carefully laying the safe(costco brand) and forcibly prying and tamping the door while jiggling the lock set. I got lucky and it popped open, never to contain one of my guns again and I returned the safe for full refund. Good luck!!

I truly believe your story. It is so sew zew bewgered that a new kit is in order.
Maybe git a kupple tree just in case there are a bunch of these not being recalled.
Then you gartzs to re-supply them with goods.

call the company they may pay a locksmith, especially considering the excellent pr they will get when you tell us how good their customer service is. If that doesn't work grinding wheel to the hinges you'll burn a few wheels but should be able to get thru the door at them.

Tell you what. I will come and take the safe off your hands for you. It sounds like it is defective and contents lost forever but as I am kind I am willing to dispose of it for you.

In all seriousness I would call a lock smith. If he cant open it you could probably get into it in about 5 minutes with an angle grinder

I wouldnt go through the hinges as there are likely pins on each side of the door. I would go through the side or top (whereve you are sure you have the lease likelyhood of damaging the contents )

Well, after more flailing around and lack of success I am going to step back and re-evaluate the situation. The angle grinder idea is appealing except for the fact that the safe is in my bedroom.

I've heard a rumor that "they" have invented an amber coloured liquid, and that if you ingest said liquid you will feel better. I will have to investigate whether or not these claims are true. All in the name of science of course.

call the company they will tell you where to drill it open and send e replacement is alot niceryou a new one i had one i bought at costco that broke the replacement is alot nicer

I had a Costco safe fail on me. The internals dropped to the floor forcing me to open it another way. I called a locksmith and told him about it and he suggested that I look to youtube for a video of someone showing off my model and noting the location of one of the pins that lock the door in place. As soon as I got an idea of where the top pin was I drilled a small hole in the side of the safe, put a screwdriver into the hole and struck it once with a hammer and the door popped open. It took less than 5 minutes and I was able to empty the safe and go to Costco for a new safe with away. Good luck to you.

Yeah, I can hear that conversation...

"Hi, Liberty? Yeah, I've got this safe that I can't get into. Where should I drill to crack it open?"

"Are you serious?"

"Of course. How do I break this thing open?"

"Yeah, sorry buddy. Call a locksmith."
