Was at a local coin dealer today buying some bullion and found this little gem for bullion prices. I couldn't resist adding it to my precious metal holdings ;)

It's a 1/4 troy oz 20 Mark gold piece minted in Prussia under the reign of Kaiser WIlhelm II. In all liklihood this came to Canada with a German immigrant after the first world war, possibly even someone fleeing nazi policies.

I buy and trade a fair bit of bullion and these are NOT what I would call common ;)

Edit: For those who are curious, as of Friday's market close, there's about $400 worth of gold in the coin.

As another curious note, I can;t easily photograph the rim, but in gothic print around the circumference it's printed "GOT MITT UNS". (God is with us).

It was made in Berlin (the "A" mint mark) a hundred and five years ago and it is GLORIOUS.

Six of those would get you a brand-new Luger with all the trimmings from Adolf Frank in Hamburg and you would even get a whole pocketful of Silver change.

Now they are all history: Gold coin, Silver change and legal Lugers.

What have we done to our world, anyway?

A beautiful piece for sure, one which was not circulated much at all.

Thanks Smellie. I also have a really cool 10 Ruble Russian Gold piece with Nicholas II on it, if anyone wants to see pics of it as well. It's also about a 1/4 troy oz. I'm partial to coins of the imperial era - if only they weren't so hard to find in nice shape ;)

OK, well at least one guy asked to see, so here's a nice little Imperial Russian 10 Rouble gold sovereign. It's also a 1/4 troy ounce coin, so melt value about the same as the German coin above. Shown next to a 1948 Silver Dollar (0.75 troy ounces of silver, so about three times the weight).

The obverse shows the Imperial eagle surmounting "10 roubles 1899 goda" (goda denoted "year" or "year of our lord" pre-communism). The reverse is a bust of Nicholas II surrounded by "B.M. Nocholai II Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias"

Ans speaking of the Imperial era, check out this Canadian bullion coin's obverse. It's on a 1936 dated bullion dollar and shows George V in all his official regalia. Older mintage coins really were very artful and regal.

"George the Fifth, King by the Grace of God and Emperor of India"

I know, I know... this is not a numsmatics forum! :)
