I think you have been watching to much TV.

Don't try and reinvent the wheel, As others have suggested make a toy gun and save yourself a lot of grief.

+1. I don't play video games so I have no attraction to them from that arena and pretty much anything you build will be stylized enough to compromise function and that is unacceptable for my uses.

To become a manufacturer, you need a local business license, followed by a Firearms Business License. The FBL is awarded by the CFO, the Chief Firearms Officer. Google Alberta CFO for the contact info, they are very easy to deal with.
FWIW, if you can profitably make a decent gun for $850, you should consider making something with mass appeal. Even a plain Glock 17 sells for $999. Either way, follow your dream!

The Auto-9 probably wouldn't even be that hard to do, since it's based on an already existing design, the Beretta 92. On that note however, the Taurus PT92 might be an easier starting point since it's already got a frame mounted safety.

Can't go wrong with a Deckard classic. I would love to see it come to life in some way, might swap out the poly synth grips for some nicer hard wood. Maybe an Austrian company 3 years from now will take the challenge.
