NR 3 gun options?

The op's criteria is a good indication he's in it for fun.
Buy a rifle that floats your boat and get good with it.

I compete with an XCR, I have a blast, and I do well.
I don't do 3 gun though, they're a tough crowd.

If you're good with the 305, buy some 10 rounders and run it.

The issue is that M14/305 is a terrible weapon other than shooting it at a KD range, when you can do your things at your own sweet time.

The safety location on M14/M305 is horrible. Unless you are very switched on and your manual of arms is excellent, inevitably there will be fumbling with M14/M305. It is a long heavy bang stick that likes to point up and the manipulation of big/stubby magazine into a clumsy magazine release system that was not designed with speed in mind. M14/M305 was ok back in the 50's and 60's when finger on the trigger and running without a safety were no big deal, but the design does not lend itself to the manual of arms needs in the modern days and the modern running/shooting games.

If there is a tight budget, I will say a type 97 will be better. It can use 10 round mags and right now the price is right. It has its own awkwardness but it is a small/compact rifle that can be easily controlled.

After looking at pricing and such on NR firearms for 3 gun, I bought a Norinco AR off the EE. If I hate it I can always sell it. Yes, it's restricted. But I have a savage model 10 in 223 that I can pop gophers with.

And yes, it is for fun. I won't be competitve, it'll be something tha I enjoy doing. Call it a hobby. My work schedule doesn't lend well to being home for every match.

That being said, I will buy some 10 round m1a magazines for funsies. Who likes reloading twice as much?

Thanks for the opinions!

By definition a shoulder controlled firearm with a rifled barrel is in fact a rifle. PCC is a sub set of the rifle family.

An anemic, under powered sub set...

I've had a few PCC's over the years.... 'Got out of 'em when I realized pistol cal. cartridges were for pistols.

You can be competitive with that....depending on how accurate it is. Most important parts of a 3 gun AR are the barrel, trigger and the scope, with perhaps having a decent compensator.

Get to know the rifle and find an ammo that shoots well in it and you'll be fine. best part about the AR is that it's completely modular, so you can upgrade parts as your budget/dedication dictates.

I'm still using the original AR lower that I bought years ago....at one point it was an STI rifle....now a complete frankenrifle.

The Norinco does have a hammer forged barrel. I've shot one that was done up with free floated handguard, improved trigger etc. It shot very well. A buddy shot it sub MOA, 5 rounds of pmc bronze at 100 using a red dot sight, bipod and back bag.

Easy to replace parts after they wear out. Fit/finish sucked but the gun shot very well and no malfunctions. I'll take that over "it has great fit and finish" any day. Nothing wrong with the Norc for an affordable shooter. The only thing to keep in mind is once you start modding them it may have been less expensive to have bought something more up scale with more of what you wanted out of the box.

I do reload for 223. I just have to figure out whats best. My savage likes 25 grains of varget and less than 60 grain pill (1:9 twist). I'd imagine the Norc would be similar.

The rifle came reasonably set up (strike fire and 10 LAR mags) so hopefully I'll have something to start with.

For most 3 gun shooting you can run cheaper 55gr fmj's and a ball powder like bl-c2 or h335, save some money on components. I usually switch to match bullets once the range gets beyond ~200-250 yards depending on target size.

The strikefire is a good place to start, and will definitely serve you well for short/fast stages. Once you get into targets beyond 100 yards I find it gets nice to have some magnification (though there are lots of people who shoot limited division with a red dot or 1x prism sight so certainly don't think you NEED a scope). The Vortex Strike Eagle would be my budget minded recommendation for a starter 3 gun scope, and would serve you very well also.

Other upgrades in roughly the order I would consider them are:

Trigger
Muzzle brake
Free float hand guard

Good luck!

struggling between xcr competition and modern varmint, does the varmint not do well with bulk ammo?

Brass cased bulk fmj ammo runs just fine in mine, and I would expect in any others. I imagine steel case would run as well, or at least as well as it would in an ar-15 with a match grade barrel, but I haven't tried it. In the past I have hear of lacquer buildup issues in chambers, but don't have personal experience with steel cases ammunition.

To update an older thread:

I bought a CQA off the EE for a reasonable price. Came with a Vortex red dot, 10 pistol mags, and some other goodies. Finally got out to the range with it. All shot were taken with the magnifier off the rifle, 50 yards, at a reasonable rate of fire, 1 shot every 1-2 seconds. 10 in each target. Ammo was the good freedom bucket.

I am impressed. I'm not unhappy at all with my purchase!
