Alright I'll call out there and get clarification. I just don't want to get drawn and quartered if I install my CTAR barrel on my Tavor and make a video of it before the cert comes in.

We're all in agreeance that the moment you complete that installation you have to start locking the rifle and transporting it as a restricted firearm: right??

Off shoot: What other rifles can end up in this situation requiring re-registration? The Tavor, XCR, and ACR are the only ones that come to mind at the moment.
 
Having an ACR registered as non-restricted and switching out its 18.5" barrel for one that is only 2" shorter and turning it into a restricted firearm whenever you want is totally a good idea, guys. Got any more?
 
Im very sure on this.... I am a verifier, I've done more than a few reclassifications. But no I haven't looked at the RCMP site, have you?
Yes, once th gun meets the requirements of restricted class it is a restricted firearm.... Again, simple.
Any non-restricted semi auto can become restricted.... Mini 14, non restricted storm, sub 2000, rem 1187, dominion arms cougar, Swiss arms classic green.... And on and on and on.

I have, and I haven't found an answer yet. I was also told by a verifier that it was a no-go, which is why I believed him in the first place. I was told explicitly: "The 30 day window is a myth."

I realize that any NR semi can become restricted. My question is how many have relatively common factory barrels available?

@Crosshair: obviously its not a long term solution. But its something that can and will happen for somebody out there. I want to know clearly what the rules are about it.

One must remember that the whole verifier thing is a joke... Just like the guys who work in gun stores, they don't know everything and some of them know nothing.
The 30 days thing is the truth... Now, this doesn't mean you should have it out shooting before the verifiers report has been submitted. With the registry gone, if you convert a non-restricted to restricted you now need to register the gun. This means that you will have created an unregistered restricted firearm, if your out and about with that and get caught the results could be very bad.

I definitely follow that. If it meets restricted criteria, you treat it as restricted regardless of what it's cert "used to say"

I'm more than familiar with gun counter wisdom. Once had a fellow try to sell me a "non-restricted 20 inch AR." :rolleyes:

Can you imagine all the trouble that store would be in if they managed to sell that thing and not register it? :p Technically, it's their own fault and not the customer's for having an unregistered restricted rifle in its possession... If I ran a business that sold firearms, I'd damn well make sure about who I hire...
 
I'm actually trying to think of other rifles that are restricted, not prohibited, by name and I honestly can't think of any. All the ones I can think of can be reclassified as non-restricted with a proper barrel.

The AR-15 is one mighty weird thing up here.
 
I would have to agree on this... I'm pretty sure the AR-15 is the only restricted by name gun. If I recall correctly they were going to prohibit it just like all the rest but the "powerful gun lobby" kicked up a fuss because it was used in shooting comps.
The list of named prohibs is long though.... Interestingly the cz scorpion is on it yet they are being brought in and sold. Different model I know but it doesn't make any sense.
 
So are they actually allowing this conversion or are they stalling the process by procrastinating hoping for a change in the laws? I am considering one but want to ensure it can be converted in 2013...lol

They are allowing this to happen. Herron said he submitted the paperwork last week and it was completed this week when I called to confirm.

I had Ian make my ACR non-restricted too....have to say I am really happy! I called the cfc to check and they confirmed that it had been re-classified and was in the process of being struck from the registry. Will be following up with them on the last part...

b_w: curious where you picked up your plastic handguard? Mine still has the aluminum picatinny one and I'd like to change it out.

Question, did you have the F/H pinned on or welded????

Barrel length is still 18.5" then the flash hider???

Just want to know cuz Ian will be recieving my SAN rifle soon but not to keen on the blackout hider he makes. Would rather just have the stock hider on it but dont want the barrel length too long.

From my understanding, having the flashhider pinned and welded to extend the barrel length is only an American thing. For it to be part of the barrel, it needs to be integral to the operation (ie rifled). That's why Ian can cut the flashhider right into the barrel.
