I need help.... My friend is over 80 yrs old. He owns a Colt in 45 LC stamped with NWMP on top. Gun is in great shape about a 9 out of 10. He says his Grand Father carried it as his service revolver and it got passed to him . He says it is registered with RCMP. He does not have a PAL. He wanted to give it to me as NO ONE in his family has restricted PAL. Also no interest in acquiring one. I want to give him some money for it even though he wants none. So 2 big questions.... 1 - What is fair price for it? and 2 - Will we have any issues transfering it to me? Thanks
Warren

Value of his Colt New Service (not saa) should be $800-$1500.... It's hard to say. Colt New Service are not highly collectible, but ones in good shape do go for a decent price. The NWMP marking means it was an early model - and all RCMP service pistols command a premium (in this country) over their civilian counterparts.

As for the transfer, you may have some issues. I can't speak in that regard, you may want to call the firearms Center and pose a hypothetical question....

COLT 45 colt NWMP SAA

I posted a thread earlier stating needing help with a NWMP colt 45. I had not seen the gun in 10-12 years and was mistaken about it being stamped NWMP. I went and saw it today. I have the NWMP members name and burial site here in SASK. Serial number 162###. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've merged the two threads regarding this same handgun into one thread.

Also, OP, for the purposes of discussion, please clarify what model this Colt is. Is it a SAA [Single Action Army] or New Service, or?

From memory the gun was made in 1895. Pictures would be nice if you could. You shouldn't have any problems with the transfer.
OK

the barrel doesn't stop at the frame, measure to the forcing cone (where the barrel "meets" the cylinder inside the frame)

It is likely a 4 3/4" as NAA suggested

That's what I figured. The part of the barrel that is screwed into the frame to the front of the cylinder will give another 3/4" inch.... ;)

And that's how it's measured for the purposes of registration / verification.

Very nice and worth considerably more than if it were a New Service. As mentioned above, it is most likely 4 3/4in so restricted only. You are a lucky boy if thats the case. Good luck.

Yeah first gen Colt SAA in .45 LC with 4 3/4" restricted only barrel length very desirable piece.

Who may have originally owned it, that's just an added bonus, especially if there's documentation to go with it.
