So sitting with a sick kiddie now, ofcourse black rifles are on my mind.

I have a shorty (10.5") upper coming soon. For short rifles I like using irons, but cannot deny the need for a red dot at times.

I was throwing around the idea of using the front sight post, a non flipping rear BUIS, but then using something like a Burris Fast Fire on an off set mount to the 1 o'clock position from the flat top, much like when this is done with a scope.

So primary is the iron sights, but with a quick change in position, I have a lightweight Red Dot.

Feedback?

I'd be more inclined to just get a QR mount for a red-dot instead of having it on the side. I can see having a primary optic like a 1-4 or a 2.5-10 and a backup red-dot for that, having iron sights as a primary and a red-dot as a secondary seems a little pointless (at least to me)

There are LOTS of very precise iron sights for the AR15 platform, I have seen anschutz style front and rear target sights for the AR15, incredibly precise target sights that will allow for much more accuracy, and obviously allow you to keep using your irons.

A quick perusal through Brownells have some things:

571-000-004WB - an adjustable aperture rear sight for standard AR15 rear sight platforms, and

923-000-002WB - an ultra thin crosshair front sight post

That way you don't have anything too crazy but you have quite a bit more accuracy potential with the sight combo.

Or this guy: 527-101-750WB with a Target globe front sight.

why not run the RD on top with the irons on a 45 degree? i just set a couple of rifles this way and the transistion from RD to irons was really fast...

just an idea...

pbr, I have always wondered:

why use 45deg irons if your primary optic doesn't have any magnification? If they are to be backups in case of failure, why not run a less bulky pair BUIS?

A simple "cause I can" suffices

It can clutter the sight tube up depending on what kind of sights you have. Having an unobstructed primary sight is very nice, although personally i like flip-ups, although 45* offset are much faster to transition to.

Thought the same....glad you brought it up. So what gives PBR? Not picking just that I recently decided to go with a offset LMT 45 degree mount with a Delta point and a Vortec 4-16 and have doubts when I see red dots with open site set ups. What are we missing?

if your a 3 gunner and you have a battery failure your transistion to irons is uber fast, you dont have anything to flip up/twist/push/click or remove and you still have a an unobstructed view through the optic.

it's a matter of preference really, but most guys who try them out seem to like the set-up.

I seem to be falling back to wanting Irons for some reason.

The off-set Irons look nice, but Im trying to use what I have for now.

I was shooting an MP5 the other week, and was completely drawn to the Rear Diopter Drum style sight.

It was so easy to use.

Diopter sights are really nice.

If you have a free float forearm, Centurion Arms makes a really nice set of HK 416 style Diopter sights (with the proper height for AR15 platforms)

And honestly I wouldn't mind using those as a primary optic system instead of scopes or red-dots at ALL. They are pricey though, but as a nice set of irons they are hard to beat.

Another option, is to have a flip-to-side mount for a red-dot, that way your red-dot can stay out of the way and then you flip it back up for longer range stuff, although I'm not sure how well they would keep a zero, usually they are meant for just magnifiers which don't require a constant zero.

Ahhh......good point. Thanks
