I got myself a 2nd hand Marlin XL7 for $500....... not a bad price for down here...
..
Now it is a 30-06! but it has the bridge type base for scope mounts.... i think these sit too high, yeah? i will put 2 piece leupold or similiar on it yeh? an a good 2-7x33 leupold.

ive heard the recoil pads are decent?

will use a couple boxes factory then get into loading down the road.... no real stress.. plain jane 180grainers.

replaces T3 9.3x62 , should profit on sale of that beast :)

any tricks or tips with the Marlins fellas?
whats the mag box like> boring?

Those X7s are very good shooters as they come from the factory. No tinkering required. Too bad they are not made any more.

The one pc bases work very well with a shorter scope like the 2-7 you mention as it affords much flexibility for scope placement and ring spacing. I liked that base and wouldn't change it.

The recoil pads do work very well indeed. No need to upgrade. I found the ergos very much like a M700.

sounds good, il have to try before i write off the bridge mount!
thanks cub, looking forward to this gun, once i sold my other .

I have the XS7 in .223, got it off here. Came in a boyds thumbhole laminate. I love it, and its a shooter. Action and trigger area great. Only complaint is the internal mag is sometimes tricky to load.
I use it for targets and hunting snowshoe hares.
I think the bases are the same as win70, theres a leupold reference that will tell you for sure. I have leupold bases and rings and a nikon 4-12x40 on it.
Its too bad that they were discontinued when remington bought Marlin as they didn't want a competing product line with the 783. I've shot a 783 and find the XS smoother.
Happy shooting!!

Mr. H. has one in .243 and dang thang izz a layzer.
I dint think much 'bout'im, but after going fur a qwad ride and
he brawt that wee kritter with him, I'm amazed by how well
it shawt.

These arr a much gooder example then them Axlis oar Remlintunzs.

I too agree that Marlin should of kept the convayyer belt go'in.

Whelen Lad, these are a great economy rifle. I have owned 3 in the past (7mm-08, 30-06, and 308) and should have kept at least one of them. My daughter still has an XS7 in .243 Win and, even tempted with much more expensive and elaborate long guns in its lieu, I cannot get her to part with it. An outstanding entry level and bushwhacking rifle. You will not be disappointed. Trigger is very nice, and the recessed muzzle crown and fluted bolt are very good as well. The recoil pad is excellent and the blind mag is fine if you are used to this style of mag and do not want to be worried about losing your mag. If you ever need a replacement trigger guard (polymer) I can send you one for the cost of postage.

oh yeah! i am keen now after hearing such good things!

sounds like its coming from a rookie deer hunter about my age from the city, dont think he is using it too much .

all happy days regarding mounts scopes an accuracy!

looking real forward to it,
good tip RE the marlin metal trig gaurd!

Have two of them. A 30-06 and the heavy barrel 22-250. Only fired the '06 a couple times with a loose mount but the 22-250 I took time to bore sight before a range trip. It was scary-accurate at 100M. Due to my short attention span I shot them, grinned, then locked th up. Time to enjoy them again methinks!

i got some total newbie mates who come for a run with me now an then, ive told them this is proberly one of them guns i dont mind if you drop in the creek or drag through the blackberry thorn or throw it in the mud LOL

i think it will also be one that i wont mind shooting 20 rounds at my farm range for A- practise B-trigger therapy and C- familiarise right up on the 3006.

of course a feed of woodleighs will be for serious winter huntin but rest of year i can see the cheapest 30 cal 150-180 grainers goin down it

whats the general deal with these niko sterling signature 3-9x40 models? ive seen em before on many budget guns... will it work alright hey?
the loopy is on the ruger one but i feel it can swap around a bit, got the 6x i might use on ruger, nikko on .222 an loopy on marlo

aught to have it next week, we do a thing called a Permit To Acquire....... two options- depending on State of the gun shop, Lodge a paper PTA which takes like 28 days or if in Victoria they can Electronic lodge a PTA from the LGS and have PTA arrive to me by mail 7 days later.
its part of the firearms registry, an ill need to give genuine reason to acquire..... which i can tell them i plan on selling the 9.3x62 for this 30-06....

cheering.

I dunno, I'm left handed and haven't noticed anything weird. Length of pull was too long for my midget arms and hunting clothing so I bubba shortened it slightly. Obviously the cheek weld is better for a right hander as it's a RH rifle with the swell? (raised cheek piece thing) built into the stock, but it's not weird or awkward for a left hander. I don't think there's any cast off built into the stock.
