Just added...Ontario shuts down Crown land camping

FAQ added to site. 4/14/20 https://www.ofah.org/covid19/faq/

Update 4/23/20.

Governments are also encouraging all Ontario residents to limit all non-essential travel and follow social distancing guidelines. While hunting and fishing are not prohibited, you may be fined for breaking COVID-19 restrictions (e.g. gatherings of more than 5 people).

Thanks for posting... a couple areas will affect me... most of my use is private... at this point I am still planning on hunting spring turkey and spring bear, holding on to those plans loosely.

Maybe I am missing something here but as long as folks keep the required 6 ft. social distance why would public launching ramps be closed, the same with Conservation Areas. It gives folks a chance at least to get out side. I am lucky where I live as these closures will not affect me much but to many it is going to be a hardship that I don't see as necessary, but an over reaction. Common sense and good judgement perhaps are being forgotten with these closures.

I suspect they just want folks to stay home and less chance that ERT would be called to an accident or injury, to avoid stretching resources and exposure.

Our rural areas are already thin on ambulance and fire resources, which is why they have a total fire ban in a lot of townships.

Because people in/near the cities were flocking to CAs just out of town. Thus crowds.

Common sense and good judgment went the way of the Edsel ...... extinct.

I fully agree, and lodged a complaint with my local municipal government on behalf of families that live in apartments in our small town. Trails, parks, playgrounds, soccer fields, ball diamonds, parking lots... all restricted. I’m blessed to have an accommodating back yard for my kids, but for families without a yard or anything, this must be hell. Working from home at the kitchen table with the kids running around and can’t go outside to burn off any energy? Brutal. At least I can send my kids out for “recess” every once in a while. Where does the balance lie between physical health and mental health?

But, in line with the comments above, council responded saying that this wasn’t due to our resident’s misuse of these amenities, but to dissuade the city folks from flocking here. (And frankly, I really can’t blame them, I’d want out of the city too). I wrote off council’s response as bull s**t until I had a chat with a friend and owner of a convenience store nearby. He said that a couple weeks back during the “toilet paper crisis” he had countless people showing up that he didn’t recognize, and when chatting, found that they’d come all the way from the GTA (a 2 hour drive) because they were following Facebook groups that were tracking and posting which small towns still had TP. So his thoughts were that if city-folk were willing to travel that far for TP, then surely they’d come this far to escape being cooped up in their apartments and condos.

I guess I agree with him. Still sucks though.

Pretty soon we'll all be securely stored in bubble wrap, velcroed to the wall waiting for our daily dose of pablum. Can't be a strain on the resources ya know...

Perhaps, but more and more it’s starting to feel like these restrictions are less and less about public safety and becoming more and more about public order.

I’d be willing to put up with a few strangers enjoying our local parks rather than to worry about being accosted by some over-reaching commissar for walking the dog.

We also need to consider our personal safety and security. I just hung up the phone from a "call to see if anyone is home". Why do I suspect that ..... I'm in northern ontario and the call supposedly originated in Minneapolis mn. Don't know and never have known anyone there. Apparently it is easy to spoof a phone number these days.

<issed opportunity to say "no".....I still have a landline with call display and never answer numbers I do not recognize.

Stay Safe!

This is clearly getting absurd. Ppl won't stand for it. They attempted to "close" the park beside my place. I live in a rural village of 4k ppl. Someone removed the sign after 1 day that said "park closed" and ppl are in the park.

They are not having picnics with 10 ppl, playing soccer, using the playground, or having wild parties. They are walking 6 feet apart and sitting under a tree reading a book. Give me a break. Ppl need to walk in a park, get some sun, and feel alive...

Imagine being a police officer and giving someone a ticket for sitting in a park reading a book, fishing, or 2 ppl playing catch with a football, with nobody with 100 m near them. It's disgusting actually, but it's happening already.

Anyone espousing this 6 ft nonsense needs needs to talk less and read more.

Probably the most dangerous lie of this outbreak is this 6 foot rule. Some people are capable of sneezing or coughing particulate up to 20 ft.

And it doesnt matter how far away from someone you are if they arent infected. Who you have contact with is 1000 times more relevant than the distance you keep. And then there is this thing called the space/time continuum. The space/time separation that is required is UP TO 20 ft for UP TO 20 days. And thats not dtay away from infected people for 20 days, but stay away from places they have been for 20 days.

When a sick person coughs on the sidewalk there is now virus on the sidewalk viable for at least a few hours if not days. If you keep back 100 meters but then a few minutes later you walk in it you now have virus on your shoes. When you take your shoes off its now on your hands, and when you rub your nose you have been exposed.

I see people at the grocery store conatantly keeping their distance from people like everyone leperacy but then touch everyone that everyone else touches and then take their mask off to pick their nose.

The truth is there was never any way we were going to shut this down. 99% of people simply lack the basic understanding in disease transmission AND the neurotic vigilance required to live in a contaminated environment.

I agree that is a possibility, so what is your solution? Lets make social distancing 20 feet? How do we even go into a store or walk anywhere? It's clear we should have been told to use simple homemade cloth masks from the start. That was a huge mistake. Almost everything this Dr. Tam says is a crock of $hit.

Mr Ford,

I am not happy about this prohibition of camping on Crown land.

Free use of Crown land is a cornerstone of my loyalty to the Queen.

I understand that these are exceptional times, but I'm pretty sure we can manage social distancing in the bush. In fact I believe I would do it better.

My solution is to lock down vulnerable people tight and let the rest of us go about our business as we see fit. If you're vulnerable or paranoid, do whatever you can/want to avoid infection. If you are less concerned, and in the 99.8% of the population that is not at great risk, maybe roll the dice and have a life.

It’s not us people who do solitary things, it is the flocking that happens when Facebook groups start telling the masses where to go. Next thing you know, tons of people appear. Don’t think for a second lawyers aren't advising municipalities to close everything to avoid liability too. I’m annoyed at the closures as much as anyone, but I’m more annoyed at people from urban centers flocking...stay home!
