Well as the long winter finally comes to a much desired end and the long hot summer looms ahead, my thoughts always seem to turn to ways of keeping myself amused during the dog days of summer,in the past a time spent waiting for september and those first chilly nights that heed the oncoming of every hunters favorite time of year...Fall! but thankfully we do have some options open to the avid hunter such as varmint hunting and to those blessed with a sensible DNR,bowfishing. The varmint rifle becomes yet another toy to tweak and customize keeping us amused for hours on end drooling over high priced target/varmint scopes and new calibers and bullets designed to shoot a flys wings off at 300 paces.Varmint hunting also gives us a good chance to befriend local farmers and landowners as we rid their property of pests, all the while scouting for big game and watching big bucks clad in velvet plow through fresh clover across the field.......So,what keeps you amused during the summer?
Hunterman.

I just put my guns away, and wander off with my dog and my fishin' pole........

I meander back when the colors change, and the nights get cold:

You can do that when you're old & you don't have a job to go to......:p

I'm lucky to live near some fantastic flyfishing waters, so I tend to do a lot more fishing than shooting / hunting in the summer. I do enjoy getting out on a good gopher shoot every now and then though.

I run my coonhounds all year long. Whether it's recreational training, the odd competition hunt (going to Bluetick days in Ohio in 3 weeks) or hide season, I get out in the evenings every month of the year. There's nothing like casting the dogs at night and listening to them work :)

Something I have always wanted to try! seems like it would be alot of fun.

Coyote/wolf hunt all winter.
Switch to Ravens/crows during calving season
Then spring Bears
Then gophers
Also do lots of sporting clay shoots in the summer, bit of fishing too.

Always something to do!

For those who enjoy hunting with dogs, it's a ton of fun! Too bad you weren't closer as you'd be welcome to join me and see what it's about.

I second running the Dogs, I start training my lab for ducks in the marsh as soon as the ice melts. Id love to learn coon hunting, but ive never meet anyone who does it. Wouldyou be interested in showing a young buck the ropes?

What part of Ontario are you in? I'm planning on going out tomorrow night for a bit.
There's lots of interesting stuff on the UKC and PKC coonhound websites as well as coondawg.com and plenty of breed and breeder sites.

Thanks for the heads up, going to check out these sites later today after retriever classes. I am working towards WC and Junior Hunter training certificates with my lab.

I live in bradford and would love to come check it out, but alas this weekend is booked solid. You planning anymore outings in the near future?
